“Beautiful views”

Lone Tree Hill Park
Reviewed January 31, 2014

Just got home from a short (2km) hike up Lone Tree Hill. Round trip took about 40 min (with another 20 min at the summit). The trail is even for the most part, very well marked with a few roots/rocks/tripping hazards along the way.
The view is spectacular, you can see downtown Victoria, the ocean, the hills of the Malahat and Bear Mountain.
Watch your step on the way down from the summit, the rocks can be quite slippery!
A moderate hike, enough of an incline to get a sweat on and get your heart rate up, but nice and short so can power up if you choose.
(watch out for dog bombs)

It has been a couple years since I made the trek up to the summit of this secluded little piece of natural beauty the CRD call Lone Tree Hill. It is a good climb but can be made in about 30 – 45 minutes and that even includes taking some stops at the many lookouts along the way. The summit is about 10 meters higher than the infamous Malahat, but you do not get the sounds of cars/trucks/motorhomes whizzing by. It is eerily quiet up there. The only regret I had was not to pack a lunch and stay for the views. When up there, feel free to explore the summit as every step you take, the scenery and panoramic views constantly change. I was there mid-week and all that time I was alone to ponder my thoughts. I did pass a lady on the way down while just 5 minutes from the parking lot. Unlike the traffic jams of people you meet climbing up/down Mount Finlayson!

Steep enough to be a challenge: go faster if you're uber fit. Short enough not to tire you out too much to enjoy the view. Stay a while, let the dog play, have a picnic. It is a spectacular and vast view. I usually combine this trail with taking the dog to one or two other places along the way to give us the workout we really need, but at least the incline increases the benefit of what distance there is.
Very small parking lot dictates not a lot of people will be on the hill with you, so usually a nice private and serene walk as well.

I go up there several times a year, and it's great to get a 360 degree view of the Highlands and beyond. (By the way, Trip Advisor's requirement that I give my visit a SINGLE date is plain stupid. I hike some places in the Victoria area several times a week.)

Awesome views with a 360 degree panorama, great ridge walk along the top of this hill. The climb was well worth it.
