I had the best croissant ever. I found out if you don't get there early you miss out on the almond croissant. I was staying at a B&B but got up early to get there when they opened so that I could purchase a couple for an afternoon treat. They also have a cake called Marie Antoinette that is delicious. They sometimes sell slices but if not buying the 6" cake is well worth the price. It has raspberry and a cream filling and marzipan covering the outside.. Nothing like it. Coffee and tea is excellent too. There is also a tea shoppe on one side of store that sells absolutely everything you could ever think of buying for tea drinkers.

Each time we come to Victoria we enjoy dropping in to browse this very interesting shop. The have hundreds of varieties of teas to purchase for home use plus they brew good teas and have great lattes. We sat and enjoyed a latte with their own reasonably priced, house-made pastries (they have sandwiches also) in a quiet comfortable "salon de the".

The food in general is pretty good. You can even have a cup of tea in a hot pot. Good place for lunch or dessert.

Be aware, some staffs are very unfriendly because of busy time during lunch time.

Murchies is well located amongst all the tourist shopping in the downtown. After a morning or afternoon of wandering around and feet getting tired, this is a welcome place to come in and have a beverage, a pastry and to just relax. It is well visited and half of the store is a tea shop with a very large variety of items to peruse.

I brought my mum to Murchies late on a Saturday afternoon for tea-time.
Ahhh, the familiar sights, sounds and smells of Murchies from childhood: so comforting.
As we waited in line, looking at the baked goodies and discussing our decisions, my eyes strayed to where we might sit. It's usually fun to sit by the front windows and watch the Government Street passer-bys, but tables are hard to get there, and lots of them were not cleared from the last customers. How about the tables right beside the line-up? Lots were free, but still had dirty dishes on them. The back area of the restaurant was available but not as fun as the front. Checking for seats again after placed our order & dirty dishes still there. Mentioned it to the staff, and got a lackluster response.
When our tea & snacks were ready we did find a front table and had to ask for it to be wiped.
Enjoyed our tea, the desserts were delicious and the servings generous. The menu, prices, quality of food and drink did not disappoint.
BUT... Turned around to put our dishes somewhere when leaving (the only place for them is the front counter that faces visitors as they walk in, not the nicest view as you arrive, but could be mitigated by quickly whisking the dishes away) and I caught a look behind the counter. It looked like it had been a busy day and no one had cleaned anything for the entire day. Clutter all over the counters, garbage on the floor and counters, spills, stuff, crumbs, you name it.
I had the impression that attention to detail in restaurant appearance was not in the staff training manual.

Here's to Murchies: Victoria's old-world, affordable and delicious tea experience. Wishing you the best of luck in teaching your young staff the power of the old-school tightly run, spick-and-span, on-top-of-things way of running Murchies in the old-fashioned way. You will need to stock up on soap, keener attitude and elbow grease.
