We were there for a family dinner recently. Quality service. The waiter was friendly and knowledgeable . The steamed rock cod was delicious, and and well done. The steamed chicken was tasty and cooked to perfection. The spinach with tofu was good. The only disappointment was the hot pot lamb. We expected that to be served in a classical hot pot, but it came in a large plate. A bit sweet to my liking.
All in all, it was a very good Cantonese meal.
Good ambience; great service. Handicap friendly ( Don Me should come and have a look at this restaurant).

We are locals to Victoria, and it's with pleasure that we share our latest discovery: Golden City Restaurant. My family and I enjoyed a lovely meal at Golden City on Thanksgiving weekend. I think we've found our new favorite Chinese food restaurant!

We were greeted warmly at the door and brought to our table. Our server was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu, and every question we asked he was able to answer promptly. His English wasn't stellar, but we didn't have any trouble communicating. He was able to assist us in picking out an assortment of varied dishes without being too pushy or impatient with our lack of familiarity with the menu. He seemed to want to ensure we had a lovely experience. In addition to our main server, there was another gentleman who didn't speak much English at all, but continued to smoothly and silently wait on our table. He made sure our teapot was always full and hot, and our water glasses were always full. Overall, the service was top-notch.

As for the food, we were highly impressed. Every dish came out hot and fresh. None of the food was greasy. The highlight was the Salt and Pepper Squid, which was battered in a crunchy cornmeal and was by far the tenderest, tastiest squid I have every had. We would also recommend the Egg Silk Tofu with Bean Curd; it was tasty dish that was particularly interesting due to a dichotomy of textures between the soft tofu and the crunchy, fried bean curd. I feel most compelled to say that we had two fried dishes, and neither were greasy, at all. The other dishes were excellent, as well: fluffy fried rice, sizzling chicken teppan with peppers and pineapple, Singapore Curry noodle (amazing!), and crisp spring rolls. There wasn't a single dish that I would complain about.

Our family will be returning to Golden City Restaurant, for sure.

Went to Golden City last night before the Russell Peters concert at Save on Foods Centre. We normally would have gone to Szechuan City, but they are closed Monday. We only ordered two dishes, War Wonton and pan fried prawns. It took 45 minutes to get the soup, which was very tasty, lots of prawns, squid, beef, BBQ pork, chicken etc, but it wasn't very hot. I had to keep asking the waiter when our prawns would be coming as we needed to leave to get to the show. They showed up about 15 minutes after we finished our soup and we're hot and tasty. The restaurant was full, mostly due to concert goers, but they should have prepared for that because it's the closest restaurant to the arena, other than Szechuan, which was closed. I will go back and try a larger meal on a less busy night. I also found the prices quite expensive for a Chinese restaurant. Also, there was a group of 4 seated near us. When their dinners came they were all cold. Four combo plates. When they asked the waiter if it was supposed to be cold, his response was that he could put it in the microwave. Nothing like a spring roll in the microwave.

Excellent fresh food cooked just right. Service was good too. There isn't a big choice of 'set meals' so we ordered several different dishes to get what we wanted and ended up with a lot of food. However we took the leftovers home and had a good dinner the night after as well.

Had a lovely dinner, as good as any meals I had in Hong Kong. Not expensive, good value for money. Excellent service.
