Fan-Tan Cafe is a great place to pop in for lunch when you're downtown. Obviously, lots of people know about this place, as it's usually quite busy, but they seem to be able to find you a spot no matter what. We've never had to wait. They have lunch specials where you can choose 3 different dishes for a set price and it all comes on one plate. The food is tasty and comes quite quickly. They don't have wifi, which might matter to some people. I'm not sure if they have a license for liquor. Anyway, a good place for a quick lunch. Try it. You'll like it. And not expensive.

A Nanaimo resident, on hearing us discussing finding lunch in Chinatown, suggested Fan-Tan, saying she comes to the city just to eat there. We took her advice, and so glad we did.

Having, unfortunately, eaten our share of bad Chinese food -- vegetables glopped together with jarred sauces -- we were pleasantly surprised at the delicate, nuanced sauces in the dishes we ordered. We took the server's suggestion of the lunch special, and each had two dishes, so that we could taste through four different ones: fried rice, spicy vegetable chop suey, fried chicken, spicy pork. While these dishes sound pedestrian, they are not. The fried rice was carefully prepared so each grain was distinct, and had a slightly charred, smoky flavor from the wok, for instance.

The fried chicken was simply the best of this Chinese dish I have ever had.

I would have been happy to return numerous times, but alas, there was just so much more to see and eat in Victoria. Take my advice, go for lunch (the combo special is very cheap) and go early. The restaurant was full at noon.

My War Won-Ton Soup and my partner's Barbecued Duck Noodle Won Ton Soup sure hit the spot on a coldish and rainy October day in Victoria. Filled with savoury meat and vegetables and not over-cooked perfection this was a delightful lunch. I would suggest this restaurant hire another server since we counted only the one for all the tables and consequently it was a longish but worthwhile wait for the food which is reasonably priced. Try it, you'll like it!

Fan Tan Cafe is a small Chinese restaurant with a big menu!
Food is good and so so priced.
They seemed to be short staffed the day we went as the only person there was greeting, taking orders, running the till and greeting people leaving!
Busy little place
