Fantastic vegetarian restaurant that never fails to impress. I love the juices, hot drinks and all the food - particular favourite is the Monk's curry!

Rebar- strange name for a restaurant, no? Strange little restaurant, too.

We asked the concierge at the Inn at Laurel Point for a recommendation for lunch, just something pleasant and light, as we had a much-anticipated reservation at Il Terrazzo that evening, and he sent us to Rebar, waxing poetic about their fresh, local ingredients, inventive menu, and so on. It sounded like just what the doctor ordered.

After a short walk, we found the restaurant, hunkered down in a low-key sort of way, and made our way inside. Yikes! Is this funky chic, or just plain funky? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a restaurant where all the tables were painted- yes, painted- different colors; the whole place looked like something from a garage sale. No matter; what about the food?

The folks in Victoria seem to be falling all over themselves about Rebar- perhaps vegetarian cuisine is still a novelty in the provinces- but really, how difficult is it to assemble a tasty vegetarian menu that is based on soups, salads, and entrees inspired by the thousand-year-old vegetarian cuisines of the Far East? It was all pleasant enough, but really, this place wouldn’t be but a blip on the culinary curve in Seattle. Revisit Rebar on returning to Victoria? Thanks, but no thanks.

As one might expect, some dishes are better than others - but the frequent turnover (and seasonality) of some portion of the menu is part of the "experimental" beauty of Rebar. Here you have the freedom to express yourself by ordering something seriously weird if the mood strikes you (to freak out the in-laws, for example?), or to order something guaranteed to be delicious in the event that you actually came to eat. For "tried and true" dishes, I would highly recommend the Monk's curry and the wild mushroom ravioli. I've eaten here fairly often in the last few years, and still can't tell whether their juice menu is some sort of joke. The servers aren't highly-trained, but won't bite, nor will they bat an eye at those who opt to order something memorable. Perhaps because of this they sometimes seem to have trouble remembering what you've ordered (particularly drinks, for some reason), but you will usually get it eventually.
