“Excellent location, comfy room and friendly west-coast service”
Reviewed 22 April 2012

The Westin is perfectly situated right beside the Whistler and the Blackcomb gondolas, but far enough from the hubbub of the village. Was there for a business meeting. I was so happy with the friendliness of staff - from front desk, to banquet staff, to the spa, to housekeeping. I was particularly impressed by the number of French speaking staff, which made my Quebecois colleagues very happy. One can't really complain about the surroundings, the mountains are simply breath taking. Though I didn't get to enjoy that particular view from my room (I had the forest), I was ok. All rooms are suites I believe, they're well appointed and clean. Only minor complaint was that the noise from the fridge (located at the end of my bed, not in a separate room like other bigger suites) was rather loud (and it came on and off), and can be wee disturbing at night. As a light sleeper, I needed an ear-plug. But all in all, I was a very pleasant stay.

great location, very close to the lifts and events and far enough away to not hear the loud crowds after the bars...perfect location.
great amenities and service... extremely helpful and friendly staff
studio suits are great...kitchen, desk area, fireplace, mountain views.
staying there again next time im going to Whistler.

Room Tip: studio suites with kitchen, great layout and very roomy

We were so grateful to the staff at the front desk staff (Annalise - Sorry about the spelling) who provided us with an early checkin after a tiring trip. She was so welcoming & provided us with a lovely room on the SPG floor with high ceiling in the East Tower. Just beautiful!

The hotel is big & well maintained. Housekeeping was efficient. The kitchen & fire place are very handy. My wife did a lot of shopping without even going out of the building! She loved the cashmere shop & bought lots of other clothing on level 1. Level 2 was where my wife & daughter spent lots of time in the steam room & spa.

The Concierge was helpful with directions & organising trip & transport. My wife needed Mylanta/Zantac about 11:10pm one night & the concierge gave me directions to the 7-11 to get the medicine. Perhaps a Convenience Store selling milk & other basics is a good idea for resort of this size.

The ski & rental store at the location is great & the staff provided well fitted boots & skis.

Room Tip: High floor in the East Tower if you are skiing. West Tower if you want to be closer to the Spa/Swimm...

After reading the mixed reviews, we didn't know what to expect. We arrived early from a 14 hour flight and the staff did everything they could to get us in early - and gave us a room upgrade. The best room is a loft room on the top level - you can see everything.
The staff at the front desk are very helpful.
The restaurant food is very good - although the Spaghetti Factory in the village is the best place to eat!

Many here say that the location is great. Absolutely. But this is only one of the five hotels next to the lifts, and the other four are all slightly closer to both the lifts and the village (Hilton Whistler, Carleton Lodge, the Sundial, and the Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside). Three of the four have the same 4-star category rating in Trip Advisor. So the location not only can be beat, but it's (slightly) better elsewhere, and let's compare the rest.

The Westin offers a screamingly fast internet that does not log you off, a morning paper, and has conveniently located washer & dryers (CAD 2 each).

But rooms (they're not suites--a kitchenette is added to a wall of the room, which lacks a dining table) are very small, the pool/hot tub is sized for a property with 50 rooms, not the ~400 it has, and the hotel hits you with lots of hidden fees:
1. MANDATORY PAID ski/snowboard storage, CAD 8.96 per item per night. There is no mention of this extra cost anywhere on the website (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/westin/property/features/activity_detail.html?propertyID=1199&activityId=1000056914) or on the confirmation; a total bait-and-switch "junk fee". Small families subsidize large ones as skis/snowboards in excess of 3 are free. All of the other 4 hotels mentioned above don't charge for this, and the vaunted drop-off tent is pretty useless: available only for ~1-2 hours in the day and located about 100 meters from where you would drop off the skies anyways.
2. Internet is not included in rate, and it's CAD 16.79 per 24-hours with no weekly packages. It is included at all of the other 4 hotels mentioned above.
3. Parking cost is the highest of all: CAD 36.30 per night. At the Carlton Lodge and Sundial it's CAD 22.40, at the Pan Pacific CAD 28.00, and the Hilton CAD 32.48.
4. All fees on website and on the property hide the fact that they exclude 12% tax.

The verdict: the Hilton, Carleton Lodge, the Sundial, and the Pan Pacific Mountainside all are closer to the village and lifts and have no hidden fees and lower parking costs.

Choosing the Westin for a 7-night stay with a family of 3+ with internet costed us an additional CAD 305.69/night in fees over the properties who are closer to the mountain and the village, plus up to CAD 97.30 extra on parking.

Out of principle, I would never return to a property with such distasteful practices. Out of being wise with my hard-earned cash, I won't either. And I notice that all the other three 4-star properties (the Pan Pacific Whistler Mountainside, the Sundial and the Hilton Whistler) currently all rank higher on TripAdvisor as well.

Decide on a last minute get away and it was so worth the trip! Had a great room with a view of the slopes and really enjoyed the time away.
