Great Backcountry experience
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Mar 16, 2017
Fantastic experience, great off-the-grid lodge with good food and friendly helpful staff. Stayed 3 nights. XC skied and snowshoed. Made the mistake of not bringing my alpine touring gear. Food is pretty good and excellent if you consider the setting. 15K XC ski in is totally do-able with good grooming. Lodge generates it's own power and filters water so limited hours of operation for both. Limited cellular connectivity but possible if you really need it. So much terrain so close and accessible for winter pursuits. Wood fire sauna with river nearby is super. Pool table, ping pong, darts, and games available. Shared bathroom was totally chill and we didn't run into any sharing issues that can occur in hostels and auberges. More snow and better quality than Whistler down the road. It snowed hard for 4 days so we didn't get to see the surrounding range or peaks but will be back for a bluebird.

Stayed at Journeyman for 5 days. There were something like 80 fresh cms of snow when we arrived, something that is very good news for backcountry skiers! We had a great stay, climbing over 1000m every day to ski the slopes south of the lodge. I don't understand why this place is not busier, it was truly excellent, right down to the cook who came and rode with us. Food was good, rooms are cramped but all you need. Great boys weekend, and the snow was super epic.

Journeyman Lodge lies at the end of a good, hard 13.5 km ski uphill through mountainous back-country. The Lodge is situated in serene valley of glaciers, creeks, tall conifers, and idyllic trails for skiing and snowshoeing. The silence is truly impressive.

The staff works hard to ensure your comfort. Meals are delicious and generous. Common rooms are large and comfortable, inviting conversation with interesting guests. Our bedroom was a good size, had a comfortable bed, was clean and had absolutely stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

Our stay was definitely an experience that will be remembered for years to come.

Room tip: Solitude Suite has exception views of the Callaghan Glacier

This place has something for everyone, whether you want to chill out by the fire and read a book, enjoy miles of groomed classic track, or shred deep untouched coastal powder. My partner and I went up for a three day ski trip and were greeted with 20 cm's of fresh pow and another 20 cm's overnight. We skied beautiful pillow lines in the trees on the storm day then gradually ventured further out and higher up as the conditions and stability improved, culminating in an EPIC 900m run down Solitude glacier from Banner Pass. Nocturnal Emissions was mind blowingly good :)
Bring extra snacks though as the lunches are a tad small for long days out touring.

Journeyman Lodge is truly a hidden gem. Tucked in the mountains, away from cell service and the harried pace of regular life, the lodge is the perfect place to unwind, enjoy the outdoors, ski, snowshoe, star gaze and simply breathe. The hosts were gracious, hospitable and professional, the rooms, warm and cozy, and the food, simple but delicious. Not to miss? The woodfired sauna and jump into the frosty river!

The lodge hosts were great and the food was fantastic! The lodge itself was warm and cozy with a nice fire and lots of new friends. We had fresh snow and blue bird skies so the ski touring up in the alpine was incredible! I can't wait to go back for a ski and a sweat in the wood fired sauna.
