Bear Country Inn
Ranked #5 of 5 Hotels in Churchill
Reviewed 20 October 2015

Let's start with the positives:
1. There is adequate heat.
2. Until the promised second water heater is installed, there is hot water unless a few other guests have taken showers near the time you want to do so.
3. There is WiFi if you stand in the hall. Goes away if you step into the room.
4. There are abundant clean towels you can get from the closet near the front door, but you need to be careful not to knock the drill bits and tools onto the floor.
5. There is a free continental breakfast two buildings down the street at the Churchill Hotel/Motel. Recommendation: walk down to Gypsy's Bakery instead, but watch for bears.
6. There is transportation to/from the airport if the truck isn't in the shop.
7. The proprietors are friendly, but really disorganized.

That said, one has to understand the difficulty of getting building materials or anything else in Churchill. There is no road to the rest of the country. Goods have to come in by train 3x a week, small plane (Calm Air) expensively through November, when they quit flying until late spring, or ship, when Hudson Bay is not frozen. This hotel consists of two double wide trailers stuck together end to end, and I assume that before the fire and the resultant water damage in one of them, it had a lobby of sorts in the middle. That's blocked off now, and what's left is a bare porch (no railing, no mats), and small entry full of tools and a ladder. Opens directly to the snow and wind. There is a narrow hall and some tiny rooms on either side in the one remaining double wide. They are trying to fix everything, but given the expense and difficulty of getting materials, and the fact that there seem to be only a couple of people working, it's a daunting task.

When we told people in town (around 800 live there) where we were staying, they gave the following answers: 1. They're open? 2. I thought that place had been condemned! 3. It's still there? 4. But they're closed! 5. I can't believe they're still in business!

Not encouraging. Still, like I said, it was clean, heated, and fairly friendly. They were obviously going to get around to hooking up the smoke detector, since the wires were hanging from the ceiling. The maid service and do not disturb signs were hanging on the doorknob, though there was no maid and the sounds of construction or the conservation people shooting off flares and pop guns to scare away an errant polar bear tended to disturb a bit.

To go see polar bears, beluga whales and such in Churchill, you need to book 6 months in advance. If nothing else is available, and you're going to be out on the tundra rovers or dog sledding or whatever, not spending any time in your hotel room, book here. Everything in Churchill is expensive, so this, which would be a really, really budget motel at home, is also.

It's an experience.

Room Tip: Rooms are equally tiny and cramped. WiFi in the hall is better closer to the entrance.

The description really does sum it up. Simply furnished room with wifi and TV. Importantly though, the staff do a great job of making you welcome and helping out with anything else you might need, including taking a van-load of us out into the wilderness in the middle of the night to see if we could get a good view of the Aurora.

Room Tip: Don't spend too long in Churchill. There really aren't that many activities to occupy a lon...

It's not a palace. The hotel has that smell of ski boots you find in many snow lodges. The rooms are average, and the bathrooms kind of suck. But this is the middle of nowhere, so they don't really have the option of having shiny new everythings. The staff worked hard to ensure I had the best chances to see the sights. Just remember it's an isolated frontier town and it is ok.

The Bear Country Inn is a nice place to stay while in Churchill looking for bears. Our room was warm and comfortable and John our host was friendly. It's a busy place but then it's "bear season". The one morning I went for some cereal for breakfast and I guess I was a little late as there was know more milk to be had. Good muffins! Would stay there again!

We stayed here two nights and while it's not a 5 star hotel, we weren't expecting that. The room was perfectly fine, the beds comfortable and all the staff friendly and willing to help. Our polar bear tour pickup was before the buffet breakfast opened however, they had someone open early to ensure we were able to get something to eat for breakfast. Again, it was perfectly fine and we appreciated the flexibility on their part. The free Wi-Fi was great. Our room was chilly so they provided a heater for us. Then the fuses blew a couple of times. But the owner fixed it with no fuss and certainly to our satisfaction. The location was very convenient, could walk anywhere in the town. Would certainly stay here again. They also provided shuttle to and from the airport.

As our flight out of Churchill was cancelled due to thick fog and we had already booked out of our existing hotel in Churchill, I stopped here for one night, before catching my re-scheduled flight the next day. It's right at the far end of Churchill's main street, Kelsey Blvd. Despite being in need of a refurb (think 1970's decor) the beds were surprisingly comfortable, and most welcome at the time I can tell you. The room itself was a twin and was rather cramped, furniture wise. Adequate sized bathroom with sink, shower cubicle and toilet (set on a raised step). There is a little breakfast room just off the reception area - although the breakfast selection itself is left in the reception area for your to choose from. A little TLC could work wonders - but I guess it all takes time and money. The owner didn't seem too keen on conversation, but perhaps caught him on an off day.

Room Tip: I had room No. 31 (facing the main street)

We recently stayed at Bear Country Inn and like everyone else found John, the host, to be very congenial. We enjoyed everything about this Inn and Churchill. It gave us a taste of what it would be like to live out here. The Inn was comfortable and the room was not as small as what I was lead to believe when I read TripAdvisor, though it was not huge either. There was only one thing that was missed whilst we were there. My wife would have liked a hairdryer in the room. To ask for one everyday would have felt like being a nuisance. One thing about Churchill that we were not aware was that at the start of the season the bears a fewer in number and less active as it's too warm for them to do anything. We were still able to see a few which was exciting. Thank you John for helping us find a tour company and for your hospitality.
