Fantastic experience…love the family vibe of lodge and friendliness of the staff.

Review of Lazy Bear Lodge
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Dec 28, 2023via mobile
I loved my entire experience in Churchill and a big part of that was staying at Lazy Bear Lodge. All the staff were lovely and a big thank you to Deacon and his family (who own lodge) who were excellent hosts. Deacon was my group’s guide and we had a great time out on the bay with the Belugas and out on the tundra buggy looking for polar bears (we spotted a mum and her baby).

I think the highlight for me was the coziness of the interior wood decor and the food. The meals were hearty and local. I tried arctic char, elk, and other local delicacies while there and the portions were generous and featured good variety of vegetables. My favourite was the polar bear shaped scones served at breakfast.

Room Tip: Go in September to see both belugas and polar bears. We even saw northern lights. The prices...

This lodge is very in keeping with the whole experience of Churchill as a whole. Situated on the main road in Churchill. While the rooms are compact, they are comfortable and there is a cafe/restaurant in house. The family run company are friendly and knowledgeable of the area, and open to feedback & actively seek it. We had Deakin & Adrienne as our guides during our stay and they made an exceptional team. Could not speak more highly of them.

Room tip: Make sure you leave time in between for your forward flights. We got fogged in on our leaving day which caused havoc with our flights.

This was an unbelievable trip. Deacon and Eric were very knowledgeable - the staff at the Lodge was accommodating and fantastic. We saw lots of bear activity including mums with cubs, and a couple of highly interactive and engaging bears. Total count was high - perhaps 30 over two days? I travelled with my 82 year old mother and staff were very solicitous. Did I mention the food? Really good - including local specialties such as Elk (amazing!). Overall highly recommended and I am looking at coming back for Belugas and Bears in the summer! The Dog Sledding was excellent as well.

My wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary as well as my wife's 40th birthday and decided to visit Lazy Bear Lodge and Churchill to see the polar bears and other wild life in the region.

We had an absolutely amazing stay with Lazy Bear. The lodge is very cosy and homely. The staff are all really friendly and helpful. Our guides (Adrian and Alex) we're superb; really knowledgeable and fun and they helped make the whole trip fantastic.

The cafe cooks up some great food and baked treats and we got a fantastic birthday cake for my wife's birthday.

The gift shop is also very cool with some nice souvenirs and other things to pick up.

In terms of excursions we did a mixture of things organised by Lazy Bear but run by other companies like a helicopter tour with Hudson Bay Helicopters (not to be missed) as well as things run by the lodge directly.

Of the lodge run activities we enjoyed the zodiac excursion the most as this took us out onto the river to encounter the friendly and curious beluga whales. We got absolutely soaked but that only added to the fun.

We did the Arctic crawler tour as well but we unfortunately didn't encounter polar bears by the crawler. I get the impression that this tends to be a bit more successful later in the year i.e later in September and in October. It was nonetheless a good tour to go on.

Every night we were with Lazy Bear we also went out aurora watching and on our second night we had an absolutely jaw-dropping display of the lights. This was truly unforgettable.

One slight negative is that the scheduling of tours and excursions is quite wide and leaves some big gaps in the days. Some of the people we were with actually had some tours cancelled because of visibility and this led to them having a large amount of downtime. Given that Churchill is understandably a very small place, there is not a lot to do in the downtime. You may want to catch up on some sleep given the late nights with aurora hunting but it would also be great if the lodge could offer some additional trips, excursions, or talks/presentations that could help to fill up the days a little more.

Room tip: If you can travel later in September, or October, Polar Bear viewings are more likely.

Our experience at Lazy Bear Lodge from the moment we were met to board our plane to Churchill was great , Arriving at the airport in Churchill and being met by staff from Lazy Bear went so smoothly . Our overall experience was beyond expectations from the moment we checked in . We stayed on an all inclusive plan, including tours every day for four days and three meals included. The food was excellent , as good as any fine dining menu , great wonderful presentations , the serving staff are so personable . The rooms are small but cozy, with white linens on the bed which give it a more updated look . But it isn’t about the room as you will discover , as we did. The Tour guides work here and are not only friendly but so knowledgeable…On tour we saw great northern lights , beluga whales on a zodiac and polar bears by helicopter and a dog mushing tour. These were the highlights for us. Highly recommend. You won’t be disappointed ..

This adventure was one of the best my husband and I have had. We arrived in Churchill to blizzard-like conditions, which actually added to the whole polar bear anticipation. Eric and Kelly ( sorry if I misspelled your names) met us there and drove (all of) us to the Lodge, it was lovely. Just like the pictures. We had a quick lunch which was very good, and then went for a tour of the town. Upon return we were able to go to our rooms and unpack before our dog mushing experience. Our room had two double beds, and we were hoping for at least one queen. A little more space for taller people. The weather had turned to a quiet snowfall for our dog sledding and it was great. Don’t miss that one! The next day we were on the Tundra buggy and saw about 13 polar bears. It was amazing! They came right up to the buggy and we all got marvellous pictures. It is definitely a trip you have to experience as I don’t think words do it justice. Second day was just as thrilling. We went to the Tundra Pub for dinner as they are licensed. A glass of wine or beer after that experience was the perfect ending…(Wally, if you’re listening)… The food at Lazy Bear was quite good but again, a glass of wine…?
I would highly recommend this trip to anyone wanting to experience something you may never see.. it is overwhelming, truly. Eric and Kelly were great guides. Very knowledgeable, approachable, and simple nice to be around. I would do it again. The bears are so majestic!
