I arrived at the end of May 2016 for a 2 week work visit at the University. I had specifically wanted kitchen facilities so that I didn't have to eat out every night. When I found out that the kitchen facility (MacPherson College) consisted of a microwave and toaster, the very helpful staff offered to switch my room into a dorm with a proper cooker (Hatcher Hall in Paton College). However, there were no pots, pans, utensils, plates etc in the kitchen so I had to buy them all!! It wasn't clear at all on the website that MacPherson had no cooking facility or that Paton had cooking options but no equipment! There are fridges in both buildings and many people do use them. It's a shame that there isn't the equipment for people to cook, especially those staying for longer than a few days. The staff are incredibly accomodating, give good advice on things to do, very friendly, give good directions and are happy to chat! I would stay here again, the rooms and facility are clean. Bed is comfortable. The doors are on a spring meaning they close fully when you leave (always take your key!). Paton college has shared bathrooms, while MacPherson had private bathroom options. There is access to the MUN tunnels which is great for getting from one side of the campus to the other in torrential rain or snow! Breakfast was reasonably good, though I only had it a few days, prefering to get my own. I took the shuttle out to the OSC campus every day and the accomodation is right beside the stop, so very handy. It is also only a 20-30 minute walk downtown, with easy access to walking trails around St. Johns. They have wifi but it came and went on my phone, was better on my laptop! Overall, I would recommend staying here with the caveat that if you are looking for kitchen facilities you will have to provide your own equipment.

Room Tip: A room with a double bed with shared bathroom was preferable to a single bed with private bathroom.

Hello,

Thanks very much for your kind feedback; we are so glad you enjoyed your stay and found our staff to be friendly and helpful! We apologize for the lack of kitchen utensils; unfortunately we do not currently have the resources to offer these to our guests. We do, however, hope to be able to offer kitchen kits in the future, and we thank you for bringing this matter to our attention. We hope to see you again in the future!

Main problem... no air-conditioning in guest room or breakfast room. Uncomfortably warm for most of our five-night stay in late June. It's like hostel-type accommodation. Rooms are well-designed but poorly maintained with scratched furnishings, etc. We didn't think that "shared bathrooms" would be a problem; but the ladies' bathroom was a long way from our room and the sinks didn't drain properly and quickly became dirty. Breakfast in the un-air-conditioned "oven" was no joke. Not nearly enough tables... even for the comparatively few guests that were there during our stay. I can't imagine what it would be like when it's busy! A big sign tells guests that they are restricted to ONE piece of fruit... toast OR bagel OR pastry (usually no pastries anyway)... yogurt OR cheese... ONE cup of coffee and ONE cup of juice. The breakfast room attendants (probably students) were unfriendly, surly and obviously uninterested in doing their job. Guests frequently had to disturb them from their iPod priorities to request replenishment of breakfast items that were missing. Apart from the nice lad who checked us in, the front desk staff were similarly unfriendly and unhelpful. Would we stay again? Not on your Nellie! Spend a bit more and find another place.

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback; we're very sorry you did not enjoy your experience with us! Unfortunately none of our buildings are air conditioned; we do, however, lend fans from our front desk. I do apologize if the sinks were not draining properly; we will submit a work order to address that issue right away if it has not already been brought to our attention by another guest. We do suggest guidelines for breakfast as we have unfortunately run into issues with some guests taking more than their fair share resulting in nothing left for others! We certainly don't mind if you help yourself to a little extra. I'm sorry to hear that you found our staff unfriendly; we usually receive excellent feedback in this area! I will be sure to reiterate the importance of service to all of our front line staff. Thanks again for your feedback and we hope you will give us another chance.

We only stayed one night, but we were very pleased with the young people on staff at the reception desk for check in/out. They were very welcoming and helpful. Everything was extremely neat and clean. A continental breakfast was included and there was certainly sufficient choice.

Don't be fooled by the wonderful pictures and the bargain beasment price. This is not a good choice of accommodation. From check in the check out our experience was awful and we didn't get a wink of sleep.
The students at check in we're not too helpful in explaining to us how we were supposed to enter the building, once we got up to the fifth floor we realised that it felt more of a prison block than a residence and feel very sorry for the students that have to spend a year there. The rooms were extremely Spartan and bare, the only bathrooms for women were on the other side of the building and all women on that floor of about 30 rooms (many double rooms) had to share one bathroom that had three toilets, three showers and two sinks. The water from the sinks only run when the sensors can sense your hand there so cleaning teeth is difficult.
We did not feel safe being on this co-ed floor if we had to make the long walk to the bathroom in the night. The bed and pillows were hospital grade waterproof covered, the floors are bare and the breakfast came with so many rules we delighted in breaking them! I had TWO cups of coffee and took a SECOND piece of fruit!! Ha
The bulding was noisy in the night so we got very little sleep and couldn't wait to leave the next day. The only bonus was the easy drive to the airport the next morning

Room Tip: Don't!

Hello,

We're so sorry you didn't enjoy your experience with us! I see that you booked a room in Paton College at our lowest rate. These are dorm-style rooms with shared washrooms as advertised on our website and booking engines. The photos on our website are an exact representation of what we offer; perhaps you were looking at a different room type than the one you booked. We recommend that guests looking for more modern facilities with private washrooms book in our Macpherson College residence. These rooms are private suites in a newer and brighter building, at a slightly higher price point. We are also happy to accommodate guests in rooms close to the washrooms where possible, upon their request. We do give suggested guidelines at breakfast, as unfortunately in the past we have had issues with running out of items before some guests could get to breakfast, despite having more than enough supplies for the day's numbers. We do need to encourage guests not to take more than their fair share so that we can continue to offer accommodations at affordable rates, and we feel that the suggested breakfast servings are excellent value for our B&B rate, but we certainly don't mind that you helped yourself to two cups of coffee and two fruits along with the rest of your breakfast. Thanks for your feedback and we hope you will give us another chance in the future.

Location is OK, but the bed is quite uncomfortable. The room is clean. There is limited items for the breakfast. There is only one shared bathroom on each floor and you may need to walk a long distance to get there. They also do not supply shampoo, which I found unacceptable.

Hello,

Thanks for your feedback! We're glad you found your room to be clean; we pride ourselves on the cleanliness of our facilities. We are sorry that you found the beds to be uncomfortable and that you were not satisfied with the washroom facilities. Please note that if you choose to stay with us in the future, we do offer rooms with private washrooms in our Macpherson College complex. These rooms are sold at a slightly higher rate but afford you more privacy and also offer amenities like shampoo and shower gel. We would also be happy to accommodate you in a room closer to the shared washroom in Paton College- simply let us know in the "notes" section of your booking that you would prefer to be in close proximity to the washroom. Breakfast is served in the continental style and includes your choice of grain (cereal, toast, bagel, pastry), fruit, yogurt, cheese, coffee and juice. We will look into other options that we can offer in the future to increase the variety. Thanks and we hope you will choose to stay with us again in the future!
