First, I should say that the food, service and entire experience at The Merchant Tavern was exceptional--probably the best meal we had all week. This was due largely to the unusual and wonderful flavor profiles--phenomenal. There is a moose head mounted at the entrance of the restaurant, but when we inquired, the server told us that he didn't have a name. However, she said that if we named it, she would tell the staff and maybe it would stick. So we named the moose Spencer and hope everyone who reads this and gets a great meal will say hello to Spencer. Let's make sure the moose keeps his name! You can call him Spence for short.

quite expensive...gin and tonic was $13.00 because i ordered it with the local tonic...meals around $38.00...had the steak frites...very small portion of steak...huge helping of fries...service a little cool...my husband loved his meal (salmon), but I would suggest going to the Keg instead and getting a lovely fresh salad, steak and veggies for the same price.

Brunch at Merchant Tavern never disappoints, the food is delicious, there are free coffee refills, and the service is always so friendly! There is sometimes live music which can be a bit loud in the morning when you are trying to have brunch with good company, but it does make it a lively place! We would definitely recommend trying the Merchant Tavern if you are looking for amazing brunch food in SJ!

I definitely recommend booking ahead, as we did, because the place was jammed. It was stylish, well-lighted, "happening," with high ceilings and a good view of the open kitchen and food assembly areas. Our waitress was lovely. Most importantly, the meal was excellent. Everything was fresh, cooked perfectly, and seasoned well. We would gladly go again. It's rather pricey, FYI. You have to park on the street, as it's in the downtown area.

This place was hopping. Even though it was packed and happening, we still got great service. I was seated facing the kitchen and it was easy to see why. The chef, expedited and orchestrated all the cook's stations and when the dishes for a table were ready, the team just got on them and brought them out pronto.
They have a fantastic bar, lots of local beers and very respectable wine list.
I'd highly recommend this restaurant.
Save room for the vinegar pie!
