We really enjoyed our stay and in Yellowknife it is at a 4 Star level , anywhere else 3 Stars. The restauarant food is wonderful however a little pricey . The views from the rooms great .
The Senior Management at top level however Staff need more training and I think they will change from reacting to issues , to anticipating Guest needs and providing first .
Would for sure recommend but please let the Managment know your thoughts and issues to turn into a real 5 Star experience in Yellowknife !

Stayed a nite. We were given a big room on 6/f.

Basic toiletries available.

Dinner and breakfast were average. But you don't get many choices outside.

Only comment would be on service. Except the chinese girl at reception who were able to delight us with her efficiency and politeness, the rest were below par. Receptionist at the evening shift was not proactive. The most interesting experience was two employees arguing how to get two work trolleys into the lift with me being in the lift. They tried like 5 mins before they gave up the idea and let the lift go! Unbelievable!

Honestly I picked the Explorer Hotel based on the reviews here. It is definitely not a luxurious hotel and is more similar to a Four Points by Sheraton and a Hilton Garden Inn. The hotel looks tired but given the short tourism season here, I am unsurprised by the lack of amenities. Service was okay and the receptionists were friendly enough. They did not have much to offer but at least they were pleasant to talk to. The hotel has a free airport shuttle and one of the major Canadian airlines also sent its crew here, so the wait time was limited. It was basically a ten minutes ride to the airport. For arrivals, the hotel designs its shuttle according to the arrival of flights into Yellowknife. There is also a direct line to a local taxi company in the hotel and it was easy to get a cab to reach places a bit further out.

The room was reasonably large with typical amenities. The bed was comfortable enough and there was free WIFI. Not the best wifi but sufficient enough to do the job. The shower amenities were sort of nasty so bring your own amenities. There is a kettle for hot water, along with coffee machine, microwave, and fridge.

There is a restaurant inside the hotel, which ranks #7 here. You are also closed to the new downtown, which has plenty of access to local restaurants and the Shopping Drug Mart is only a five minutes walk away, which opens till 10pm. There are no dental kits or other items available, so please be prepared.

In conclusion, I have no problem returning to the Explorer hotel because you don't have many choice of decent hotels. As noted by others, an updates will be great, as well as faster WIFI.

Overall a nice hotel. The staff was always friendly. The bathroom featured a great shower with lots of hot water. The breakfast buffet was only okay; it had excellent bacon, but wet and runny scrambled eggs.

I can't give 5 stars because of two things. One, steam from taking showers set off the fire alarm in our room more than once. Also, the Wi-Fi only worked intermittently.

I went to Yellowknife Aug 3 for a week with my sister to see her son, my nephew. The hotel staff, restaurants etc were all excellent. They bent over backwards to ensure we had a great stay. We went on a float plane ride, arranged by one of the staff members. It was really a once in a lifetime experience. If you have an opportunity to go, don't hesitate. The plate is the hotels prime rib.
