Lost opportunities

Review of Explorer Hotel
3.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Dec 1, 2024
We stayed at the Explorer Hotel for three nights. Staff were very accommodating and friendly and efficient. Food at the main restaurant and pub was terrible. Avoid eating there at all costs. Pub was enjoyable with terrific bar staff (staff throughout the hotel were exceptional). Sadly, the hotel seems unconnected with the local indigenous community: there are very few representations of indigenous culture in the hotel (no art or information displayed), and no gift shop offering indigenous art or souvenirs for sale (only vending machines offering pop and candies). All of which suggests that the hotel is a purely mercantile operation with no connection or representation with the local community. The result is a lost opportunity to inform and educate visitors (no doubt their main clientele) and build ties with the indigenous community. It is also, importantly, a lost opportunity to build a strong and resilient hotel brand.

Dear Pedro382,

Thank you for your review.

I was pleased to read that you found our staff to be "exceptional" thorughout the hotel, I will be sure to pass these comments on.

The hotel does in fact have several pieces of indigenous artwork, however these are mostly displayed in our conference and events spaces. We do also encourage local indigenous artists to visit the hotel to sell their arts and crafts to our visitors.

If you could provide me with more specific feedback about the food in the hotel, I will certainly review this with my Chef.

Many thanks,

Nicholas Carn - General Manager

The hotel was to pick us up at the airport and the bus left just as we exited the airport. I called the hotel, who did not pick up the phone. So we took a taxi to the hotel and I informed the front desk I would like to talk about the bus, he very rudely said I do not want to talk about the bus and walked away from me.
Breakfast was supposed to be to be prepaid but the restaurant refused to acknowledge this and made me pay for every day so far. Tonight only one elevator worked, I personally could not recommend this hotel to anyone!
And they do not care they were rude or anything, I've complained to my travel agency to no help at all.

Room tip: Just realize not every one has a good experience at this hotel and management does not care.

Dear Companion31907363490,

Thank you for your review.

I was disappointed to read of your experience with the front desk agent regarding the shuttle. I will address this with the Front Office Manager.

I will investigate the comment regarding only one elevator working, and I thank you for bringing this to my attention.

Many thanks,

The Explorer hotel in Yellowknife is a perfect accomodation option for exploring the great NWT. Hotel is centrally located, the rooms are spacious and clean, there's a continuous airport shuttle, and all tour operators offer pick up at this hotel for aurora tours.
Even our midnight check-in was so warm and smooth, it definitely set the tone for rest of our stay.

It was incredibly hard to change my reservation once it was made. Nobody seems to answer the phone at Reservations and there’s no way to change it online. I ended up writing an email explaining the situation (flight canceled due to weather)After some back and forth, I thought everything was sorted so I could arrive the following day.

It turns out nothing in the email was honoured and I had to pay for an extra night because I was deemed a “no show” the previous night. My email correspondence made no difference to the front desk clerk, who insisted I make a new reservation and promised to discuss the situation with his boss.

Two days later, I see I was refunded for the “no show” night and charged a higher rate for the subsequent night.

I will avoid this hotel at all costs!!!

Room tip: Do not do the “pre check-in” texts and emails that The Explorer bombards you with. It’s impossible to change once you’ve done it.

Dear Originalli,

Thank you for your review.

I would like to express my sincere apologies that your experience was not to our usual high standards.

I have investigated your comments with my team, and found that your email was received 8:45am, and our Front Desk responded at 8:51am. We do require confirmation from the airlines for cancellations due to weather. Unfortunately we did not receive this until the day after your original arrival, and therefore there was a charge made for a no-show. I am pleased to advise that this charge was refunded as soon as we recieved the necessary documentation. The hotel operates daily rates, based on availability, and the rate on the night of your original arrival was slightly less. I can confirm that you were booked on the hotels 'best available rate'.

Once again I thank you for your comments, and I do hope we have an opportunity to serve you better on a future visit to Yellowknife.

Thank you,

Nicholas Carn - General Manager

I was so happy that finally I booked The Explorer Hotel. I think it is the best one in Yellowknife.

Location!!! The hotel's location is very good, close to downtown, only 300 meters to Indepent Grocer -- a big supermarket.

Room - Room is big, clean and with a nice view - our room is on the lake side of the building.
A microwave and a mini refrigerator in the room. Lobby has sufficient seats that you can sit and wait for aurora tour at night.

And, the Airport shuttle is a upside and a plus.

I would recommend Explorer to anyone visit Yellowknife.

I take people to see the Aurora, and have been staying at The Explorer for 20+ years. It is a really great hotel. The food is excellent, the rooms nice and comfortable, and the management very helpful if you have a problem. Also, Aurora Village comes right to The Explorer to pick up people for the best aurora viewing.

I would not stay anywhere else in Yellowknife.
