Owner description: One of the most magnificent loop drives in North America treats visitors to the spectacular scenery of the Cape Breton Highlands.

For more than 4 decades I am a "summer settler" of Cape Breton Island and cannot count how many times I have shared this magnificent itinerary with friends from around the world. There are so many "lookout points", short side trips to see water falls, that no matter what the season, nature is endlessly variable and no two trips are alike.
Its unspoiled natural beauty is timeless.

We stayed in Baddeck and did the whole drive in one day, including quite a few stops and 2 walks - skyline Walk and Middle Head Walk. Very enjoyable and didn't feel rushed.

Amazing ride with beautiful sights. We went in July but were told the best time to go is in the fall because of the beautiful colours.

We spent several days on Cape Breton. We did the Cabot Trail in sections. To try and do the entire road in a day is an injustice. There are too many things to stop and enjoy.

The west side of the Trail offers (in my opinion) the more spectacular views. This side is definitely a mountain road. It is not narrow but is winding and has elevation changes.

The top section of the road just passes through forest. This is where taking a side trip out toward the water and small villages adds to the experience. Detour to Meat Cove and/or take the Coastal route that will loop back the Cabot Trail.

The east side is a bit more narrow, and does offer some spectacular views. You have more access to beaches and coves on this section.

All in all, this is a top 10 scenic drive. This is coming from someone who has driven Trail Ridge Rd. in Rocky Mountain NP, Going to the Sun Rd. in Glacier,NP, Beartooth Hwy in Montana and the Icefields Parkway in Banff/Jasper NP.
