The staff is very nice and there is a cafeteria downstairs. The room was quite big, and I was lucky to sleep in a 6 bed dorm, just with another girl. It takes about 8 minutes by walk to the downtown, which is not very big. I've never been out at the evening, because I was too afraid to retourn back to the hostel by myself. There were all the time lots of homeless and creepy people.

This hostel was an average hostel with some pros and cons:

- Fully equipped kitchen
- Nice hangout area outside to socialize
- Wifi works decent

- Gets super hot at night

The hostel has a cafe/bar downstairs. It wasn't every super busy when I went but it was nice to be able to grab some breakfast/coffee in the morning. The hostel is about a half an hour walk to downtown. Washrooms are of average cleanliness. There are a few bars nearby as well.

Room Tip: Visit the Seven Bays Bouldering Gym/Cafe - only 5 min walk away

Everyone is friendly and is happy to give recommendations and knowledgeable enough to give the right ones , plenty of space in the cafe they run underneath to chill/ use laptops etc if needed. Very communal feel, would easily stay again if I needed a place in Halifax.

Loved staying here. From the moment I arrived the staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. I checked in for a week which turned into six weeks. Michelle and Steph were both exceptionally welcoming and went above and beyond to help out with local information and travel advice. The rooms are comfortable and the cafe also has a great vibe. One of my favourite hostels. Highly recommend staying here

Pros - lots of friendly, interesting people stay here. Steph from Australia who cleans the place is great. Otherwise...

Negatives - unbelievably noisy. They have dances downstairs once, sometimes twice a week, sometimes with NO WARNING to the guests. Music at ear-splitting levels until two in the morning. Really bad hip hop for the most part. The staff is either delusional or deliberately lies about the volume. People who had booked for multiple nights left after one after because of these dance parties. Even during the day the music from the cafe is so loud you have to raise your voice to be heard in it, and can be heard throughout the day upstairs. Maybe the staff should spend the night here and see what they are putting their paying guests through. In my last three nights there, I got less than three hours sleep through two of them. One night there was an unannounced birthday party downstairs that went from 5pm until 2am. Two nights later there was a another dance from 9pm until 2am. Then the person who opens the place shows up at 7am and turned on the music at near full volume with no regard for the people upstairs trying to sleep. Another time the cafe was closed because it was a public holiday, but there was a staff person in the cafe doing bookkeeping or something with his girlfriend. And of course they had the music going full blast so even on that day I couldn't have a moments peace. You get the picture. Maybe the guests should be allowed to come over to the owners place and party in her living room till all hours of the morning to give her a taste of what she puts her guests through. Put simply, the staff is thoughtless and runs the place like a group of junior high school students. Zero professionalism.

Three people got stuck in the bathroom because the door sticks. No one from the staff could be bothered to take the door off its hinges and plane it down. At least one of the burners on the stove doesn't work. Microwave has no rotating glass plate. Computer doesn't work half the time. Silverware draw is a disorganized mess. No can opener. Toilet leaked for weeks. Fridge door needs to be hinged from the other side so it doesn't open into the hallway. Apparently no one on staff knows how to do this. Showers are cramped and dirty with broken faucets. Unbearably hot in summer. And nothing was done in the two months I stayed there to fix any of this. Owner never once came upstairs to inspect the place the entire time I was there.

Food in the cafe is healthy but bland and overpriced. The all day breakfast, served on Sunday, was the worst I ever had. Sausages tasted like hot dog. Staff frequently gets orders wrong. Last night I was there two people came into the dorm and started yelling at 1am. Then they went into the bathroom to have sex and broke the toilet seat. Probably still broken. Food got stolen.

Yeah, and then there was the noise. Did I mention that...

Do not stay here. The competition is only a few dollars more and worth it. The owner needs a wake up call that this is NOT how you treat your paying guests. Train the staff to do repairs or hire someone who can.

You're running a hostel, or you're running a hip hop club. Make up your mind.

Room Tip: Ask for the back room away from the street. It's quieter. A little.

The service I received from the staff was amazing. Very friendly and willing to do everything possible to make your stay as worry free, pleasant and comfortable as possible. Particularly, Michelle, the owner is a wonderful person, polite, considerate, kind and pleasant. The rooms are pleasant, clean and the beds are very comfortable. Location is great with close proximity (walking distance) to all attractions, historical sites and harbor. On site there is a cozy cafe-restaurant with lively vibe and great atmosphere. The food is great and its taste is the closest to homemade. What I like the best is that I felt home away from home. The value you get from the price you pay for all of it is outstanding. I highly recommend this place to anyone if you traveling on limited budget.

Pretty easy to get to from the Scotia Center stop (if you're coming from the airport or by bus anywhere else). The place was pretty empty when I was there, apparently people don't vacation to NS during the winter.... The rooms were fairly clean, quality lockers (not loud clangy ones) were included, free wireless internet and a computer, kitchen and a few other things that would come in handy staying for a longer period of time. The coffeeshop downstairs is solid too, and the food/selection is really good. Staff were all very nice and responsive.
