You can't miss in Halifax with the Waverly Inn. That's if you enjoy homey, antique filled, honest, clean, happy, unusual, free parking, wifi, and walking distance to everything. Book the Oscar Wilde room to sleep where the legendary author slept. I loved it here but no hot tube, pool or bar. A great stay with simple breakfast. Great livingroom to sit and relax. It even had hot cider and scones in the hallway. Charming, charming and privately owned.

Room Tip: Oscar Wilde room to sleep where a legend slept.

Just returned from a few days at the Waverley Inn in Halifax. As you can see from the photos it is a beautiful Victorian hotel that still has a lot of charm and beauty. As you would have expected our room was filled with Victorian era furniture which was elegant and comfortable. The room included a flat screen tv with cable, refrigerator, full bathroom, and all the usual niceties. The bed was comfortable as we're the selection of pillows. The included morning breakfast was nothing fancy but filling. It included breads, bagels, muffins, cereal and a selection of hot foods such as French toast, ham, boiled eggs and pancakes. The staff were very friendly and helpful. One of the best features of the Waverley is its great location. There are great restaurants surrounding the Inn of a variety of cuisines from flatbreads to pub grub, two Thai restaurants to ribs and pizza. Places of interests including Pier 21, the Marine Museum, the Art Gallery of Noa Scotia, the Alexander Keith brewery, etc are a short walk away. The habour with all of its activities is likewise a ten minute walk. There is a full grocery store within ten minutes walk. Spring Garden Rd, which is about a ten minute walk, offers a number of stores for shopping.Fresh coffee and tea are always available in the lobby with occasional baked treats. The only drawback could be for people having difficult climbing stairs. Ask for a ground floor room. Great location, comfortable hotel, quiet area and very reasonable price. We will definitely stay here on our next Halifax visit.

Pros

- beautiful Victorian home
- great location
- spotless housekeeping
- friendly staff
- accommodated early check-in due to early flight arrival
- full breakfast with choices

Cons

Given the age and design of this building, there is virtually NO soundproofing. Every noise is heard throughout: footsteps, plumbing, conversations and, yes, snoring from adjacent rooms.

I had a disruptive sleep the first night due to someone snoring in the room next to mine. Therefore, I spent from 2 - 4 in the morning sitting at the computer in the Inn's parlour. The night clerk also heard the snoring, but said there was 'nothing he could do about that.' (I presume that the inn was fully booked since there was no suggestion from the clerk to move me to another room.)

The second night there was a group of guests who had several rooms next to mine. There was a constant flow of traffic going from room to room, opening/closing doors and shuffling of furniture well past midnight. The third night was a similar experience - involving a different group of guests - until 1:30 a.m. - at which point I notified the night clerk and he spoke with the guests about the matter.

It is not unreasonable to expect "quiet time" after midnight. Unfortunately, however, I got no more than four hours sleep each night . . . and even those were not without interruption.

In view of the design of "The Waverley Inn" :

1. Guests should be made aware during check-in that sounds travel easily throughout the building. This gentle reminder, hopefully, will be enough for guest to modify their behaviour as a courtesy to others - especially after midnight.

2. The Night Clerk should do a "walk about" around/after midnight to see that guests have settled in for the night. I would like to think that this would not be necessary but, as shown by my recent experience, not all guests are naturally-inclined toward courtesy for others.

Unless there are changes made at "The Waverley Inn", it would be wise for light sleepers - or those who have trouble getting to sleep - to stay elsewhere while in Halifax.

AFTER ALL, A GOOD NIGHT'S SLEEP IS THE VERY LEAST THAT ANY GOOD OVERNIGHT ESTABLISHMENT SHOULD PROVIDE.

Room Tip: (see above REVIEW regarding building quality)

Dear MickGar2010,

I’m so disappointed to hear you did not enjoy your stay with us. A majority of our guests are repeat visitors and most comment on the serenity and quiet of the inn. I want to address your concerns as all of our staff take valuable input like yours very seriously. I invite you to contact me directly so we can further discuss your unsatisfactory experience at the Waverley.

We would be so grateful if you consider giving us another chance. Thank you for your feedback and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

All the best,

I felt like I was staying in an Art Museum. The place was stunning. Everything decor wise was Vintage. We stayed in the Standard room which was a double bed, so it was a little tiny; but other than that the room was great. I loved the fact that the vanity was outside of the bathroom making the sink and mirror accesible at all times. It was very romantic. The front desk staff were very helpful, and knowledgeable about the inn. Great location to downtown everything was a stones throw. BONUS: FREE PARKING DOWNTOWN & FREE BREAKFAST!

Room Tip: Book on Hotels.com great prices!

My husband and I enjoyed our stay at the Waverley. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and spacious. Breakfast in the morning was very good with lots of options hot and cold. We would stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor. We were on the ground level and had to deal with some street noise...
