It's a restaurant to go to for the food, not the decor. It's pretty bland both inside and outside, although the washrooms are clean and nicely decorated.
It's a small place dominated by the open kitchen along one wall.
The blackboard menu doesn't tell you much. What is "My German friend?". You have to ask and the wait staff will be delighted to explain. Turns out is a a small piece of pork tenderloin served with exactly four french fries. But golly, is it good! The pork belly with shrimp was in a fiery sauce, but it was great, too. The flaky pastry pizza was a bit odd and is a cold dish, but interesting. The grilled cheese is fried bread and cheese with a great bit of meat and chutney inside. I was not blown away by the bacon and chocolate dessert but my wife loved it.
They have a good selection of wine and three bottled beers. I had the one from Ottawa which was great. They do also now serve cocktails.
People here have frequently complained about the price to portion size ratio. The solution is to come on a Thursday when two can dine for $69. This is two alcoholic drinks, any four mains and one of two desserts. As all the items we chose were quite rich, and reasonably large portions for tapas, this was plenty enough food for us.
This is a very interesting and different restaurant which is worth a visit for its unusual and imnovative food and good service.
