We visited La Casa tonight for the first and last time. We were celebrating our anniversary. We had reservations and arrived a few minutes early. The hostess was pleasant and took my husbands crutches (he had fractured his hip) to a safe spot in a corner near our table. The first irratating thing for me was the chair seat was so high My feet couldn't touch the floor despite wearing boots with a 2" heel. I don't fault the restaurant for this as I run into it often but it is very uncomfortable to sit much longer than half hour, enough for me not to return. Our waiter, Tibor, arrived and announced the specials and took our wine order. While reviewing the menu it became apparent that my husband and I had two different menus. When Tibor returned I suggested he might want to update mine with the latest menu and pricing. He didn't even say thank you, no sense of humour! Since I don't eat wheat my husband asked about the appetizers and were any wheat free? Tibor said "no" and that there was ample choices and after all, we were in an Italian restaurant. We decided to pass on the appetizer and ordered the Beef tenderloin done medium rare for myself and my husband ordered Lasagna Alforno. When our order came I cut into my steak and the first bite was medium well to well done, not a sign of pink, very disappointing. Since Tibor didn't return to ask how everything was I cut through the middle of the steak and it was medium but definitely not medium/rare. The garlic mashed potatoes had no hint of garlic that I could taste. The steak was tender and flavourful, asparagus cooked perfectly and the portobello okay. My husband said his lasagna was good but nothing special and not as good as what we make at home. Tibor never once returned to ask how our meal was and so when he placed the dessert menus on the table we said "no" (earlier in the evening we had mentioned splitting a dessert). We are still shocked at the fact that Tibor never returned to ask how our meal was. We had a gift certificate and were so disappointed in the service that we only tipped on what we had to pay. Normally my husband is a reasonable tipper and would have definitely tipped on the total amount of the bill. The hostess was an exception and returned twice to fill our water glasses and was very pleasant! She should look for a better place to work! We both agree that we will never return, nor will we try the Black Trumpet, owned by the same people. I would not recommend La Casa on King Street, London based on the service we received. It was also very noisy in the restaurant and we couldn't have normal dinner conversation.
