“Great gem by the Marshes Golf Course”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2011

After a week at Les Suites in Downtown Ottawa, my date (who flew in) and I checked in at Brookstreet to attend a friend's wedding on June 4 weekend. The rooms were nicely appointed (love the modern/masculine colour scheme), quite high tech in fact (well suited for the tech crowd visiting Nortel, Alcatel etc. out in Kanata). The restaurant downstairs looked amazing and the bar was hopping every evening. Perhaps there was a convention/corporate retreat going on that weekend. However, breakfast was rather pricey, so my date and I drove out to the nearby Coras for sumptuous breakfasts on both days.

The only annoying thing was how you need to use your security card all the time to access the guest floors. I got locked out once!

Hotel location is relative here - Brookstreet is really far from Downtown Ottawa, but it was right beside my friend's wedding at the Marshes Golf Course. The hotel even had a van to shuttle us wedding guests to/from Marshes. Good service.

Thank you for your feedback, we're so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us! The security of all of our guests is very important to us which is why access to your floor and guestroom is established upon check-in. It would be great to have you stay with us again in future; perhaps one of our accommodation packages that including dining options and or golf would be of interest?

Hi quality resort with good food and bar facilities. Very confortable rooms. 10 minutes of the Scotiabank Place but far from Ottawa (20 min + depending off traffic).

Rooms are very comfortable and the hotel has an effortless elegance but functionality about it. Wrong time of year for me to make the most of it as an avid golfer so maybe next time...

I could ramble on for some time about the good things this hotel has and does but many have taken the time to do that before me....

The down sides for me.

1. Internet, way too expensive relative to other "High end" hotels. It is a service, not a way of making money. The infrastructure costs would be covered many times over per year, either that or they got fleeced by who ever designed and installed their system.

2. In room dining and bar dining, too limited a list (I accept they restaurants were being revamped during my stay but that not my fault, did I get a discount?! Not on your nelly!). In Kanata there are no that many good places to eat (opposed to more pub/bar type food) and as this is probably the prime business hotel in the area the list should be more extensive. If your there for a week or so you will quickly become tired of the options. Another gripe is the 3 dollar charge for room service, I don’t want to get into the culture of tipping here but why not give the three dollars to the person who delivers it and state on tip. Why am I tipping someone for placing a tray on table, how wrong or right can they get it?!! I paid 25 dollars for a club sandwich, menu price was 15, that’s just bonkers!

3. One mark for me of a high end hotel, which the Brookstreet seems to going for, is attentive but invisible door staff. There are big heavy doors into the lobby and whilst one minute they are all over you in that slightly too friendly "and how are you today" (Is he after a tip??) kind of way, the next day he is no where to be seen. Granted they may be helping with luggage so if a hotel tries this set-up they have to have 2 door staff. (Company for each other and redundancy when guests turn up).

4. Music. Now I know this is tricky one for hotel but the Brookstreet once again seems to be trying too hard to be something it should not. High brow piano jazz music, just a bit too loud and whilst I do enjoy jazz of this niche genre I often found it grating after a couple of hours reading the papers or sipping on a cool beer after a day at the coal face.

Package it all up. A good hotel with good facilities that seems just a little lost on who the target audience is. It wants to be something high brow, but in reality it does not get that clientele though the doors en masse and instead has a broad spectrum of patrons. If I was paying out of my own pocket I may look else where but it is the best hotel around the area and the rooms are good and well priced.

Trying to cater for everyone is a recipe for disaster once the fizz and bang of what is still a new kid on the block has worn out. I just wish they focused more on the high end private market and the business market that have already got captured, then perhaps breakfast would be included and I am not paying yet another tip to someone who brings me toast and a cup of coffee whilst slowly going mad from 24 hour jazz music!

Thank you for your consideration in recommending Brookstreet and also for your detailed feedback. Your comments are important to us and impact the decisions we make in ensuring a sensational stay for all of our guests. There have been many upgrades to our Internet services over the last year, allowing us to provide some of the city's fastest service for our guests (with speeds up to 100Mbps); during which time we have not increased our fees. Additionally, complimentary Internet is available in our lobby, lounge and cafe areas. Your patience during our renovations are most appreciated. With renovations now complete, we have just launched new, more extensive menus for both our Perspectives Restaurant and our new Options Jazz Lounge. We appreciate your patronage and would be pleased to welcome you back in the future, hopefully when you can enjoy a great day on the course!

The Brookstreet hotel is quite comfortable and the staff are attentive and very cooperative. I loved the bar in the lobby which had music most nights (Sonia and Alba take request, fantastic) , free internet access and the food was quite reasonable.

The rooms were spacious and it is a frills hotel (hair dryer, tea and coffee maker, ironing board and iron - etc). The room service is fast and maintenance very helpful. I was not impressed with the cleanliness because some areas of the room was covered in dust and once I actually had to call house keeping because my room had yet to be cleaned at 5pm! The situation was immediately rectified but it was in excusable! Internet service in the rooms is NOT free!

The atmosphere in the hotel was cleverly created by mixing an easy comfort with certain elegance. Obviously all these come at a pretty expensive rate so if you are on a budget give Brookstreet a big miss, if not enjoy the spa, gym, indoor pool, sauna and hot tub.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the golf course and preferably higher up.

Lovely decorated spacious and bright modern rooms. Large clean bathrooms, great hotel decor. A very posh hotel with lovely views on the River and Golf Course. Fantastic fitness facilities and spa.

Room Tip: Ask for a Golf Course view room, great view of the river and Ottawa sky line.

Really awesome gym and excellent customer service. Nice general feel, atmosphere, and art. Food was good, although the only bummer is that the main restaurant was under renovation that week. Would definitely stay there again!
