Owner description: Opened in 1914, the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) showcases art, culture, and nature from around the globe and across the ages. One of North America's most renowned cultural institutions, Canada's largest museum is home to a world-class collection of more than six million objects and specimens, featured in 40 gallery and exhibition spaces. As the country’s preeminent field research institute and an international leader in new and original findings in biodiversity, palaeontology, earth sciences, the visual arts, material culture and archaeology, the ROM plays a vital role in advancing our global understanding of the artistic, cultural and natural world. The Renaissance ROM expansion project (2007) merged the iconic architectural heritage of the original building with the Studio Daniel Libeskind-designed Michael Lee-Chin Crystal. A distinctive new symbol of Toronto for the 21st century, the Crystal marked the beginning of a new era for the ROM as the country's premier cultural and social destination.

Too much text, tiny artifacts, most of them reproductions. Sharp edged vitrines, benches too low made hazards. I could have learned more about the Vikings and saved my admission money too by reading the Viking entry on Wikipedia. Just being there put me in a bad mood. A friend who went only stayed 20 minutes. I lasted for an hour. Also, items in the gift shop are junky.

Hi Philip,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and sorry to hear it didn't meet your expectations. A nice way to experience our exhibits is to take one of the guided tours - the docents are really friendly and knowledgeable, and it's a a great way to experience the information without being overwhelmed by it.

Best,
Sophie

We were pleasantly surprised because even their website doesn't seem to publicize their Chinese collection adequately. The temple art was huge. The Chinese burial art was extensive. I wish they had more videos showing the hows and whys. The children education area also offered an extensive dress up in cross cultural, cross social class options. Very well explained hands on activities. My son wanted to come back after lunch, but we had another destination. For an 11-year old who wanted to come back after a 3 hour tour, that's very high praise!

Hello,

Wow, thank you for the high praise indeed! So glad to hear you and your son enjoyed it. Yes, our Chinese collection is beautiful and the largest collection of artifacts outside of China - truly a great place to spend the day. Hopefully we'll have you back soon! A membership is the most affordable way to go if your son wants to come back - it gives you unlimited access to the ROM for one year, including access to all of the special exhibits.

Until the next time,
Sophie

The ROM is fantastic. Whether you're looking at a featured exhibit or visiting permanent ones, you won't be disappointed. Best if all, the Bata shoe museum is next door.

We have a membership to the ROM. We travel 2 hours each way in order be able to enjoy what the ROM has to offer (WHICH IS AMAZING!).

BUT

Every time we go there we get lost. The map handout is useless; there is poor (if any) signage; no one to ask. The last straw was this weekend when we did find a ROM employee to ask and she sent us off in entirely 180 degrees in the wrong direction. We finally took matters into our own hands and descended from the 3rd floor to the first so that we could take the elevator to the 4th floor.

We will renew our membership but know that there will be unnecessary stress as we try to find elevators, exhibits etc.

Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience, and sorry about the trouble you experienced navigating the space. A nice way to get a lay of the land is to take one of our museum tours - they often visit different parts of the museum and it can help with orienting where certain stairs or elevators are. Hopefully we can better assist you next time - if you stop by the membership the next time you're in, there's always knowledgeable staff who can help direct you where to go.

Until next time,
Sophie

Visited with our children for the first time on a recent trip to Toronto. We found the museum had lots of great exhibits and we weren't even able to see all of it (time constraints). We had lunch in the cafeteria downstairs, and it was pretty good (and very convenient).
