“Rowdy atmosphere and interesting food that came with the price”
Reviewed 1 April 2012

After hearing so much about this place, we tried on a Thursday evening early around 7pm and waited for about 30 minutes. There was an enclosed area to wait in the cold weather. Inside, the atmosphere was warm and rowdy. Great place to get drunk (the purpose of izakaya) and have fun but not on a date or having good conversation. Typical of Asian style eating, food was meant to be shared tapas style and the variety was good here. We tried fried brie (delicious fried fat!!), fried octopus ball (expecting a little more to it), grilled pork loin (nothing outstanding but had good sauce), yaki udon(good flavour with beef and mushroom), bibimbab (had same flavour as friend udon , thus prefer Korean style better), seaweed salad (too little seaweed), and fried chicken (beyond KFC!!). Maybe if we consumed saki or Japanese beer, the flavour of the food would be enhanced. The portions were small and thus not great value (around $30 with no alcohol or drinks). Great place to socialize but overall a little overrated.

“Taste of Japan”
Reviewed 20 March 2012

If you want to experience a fun, loud, and crazy experience; THIS IS THE RESTAURANT you've been looking for. The energy here is always high, I absolutely love it. Food, service, attitude, atmosphere. I especially love their sashimi shrimp, pumpkin croquette and mushroom bibimbap (Korean rice) MUST GO if you're in downtown Toronto, NO EXCUSE! They come in small dishes, so you can order A LOT, and try different things!

“Happy Bouncy Atmosphere”
Reviewed 8 March 2012

Didn't know what to expect going to Guu for dinner as I had never been to a Japanese restaurant before, I needed had worried!
From the second you walk in the door you feel like a part of the restaurant family!
The whole place says hello to you as you come in, all the orders are shouted between the staff the kitchen and the bar!
The food is just quality! I can't say anymore!
Go!
Get out your comfort zone and go to somewhere different and you won't be disappointed, I promise.

That said, don't go for a quiet romantic meal, it won't happen as everyone sits beside everyone else on bench style seating.

“SHIBUYA OR CHURCH STREET?!?!”
Reviewed 25 February 2012

Guuing is not just addictive but is like going into a time machine that transports my husband and I back to Shibuya-Ku, Tokyo, Japan where we resided for 5 wondrous years. The sights, sounds and vibe are all so uniquely Japanese. The food is classic Japanese with a new twist served in tapas-style. The best is to eat all their 'Daily Fresh Specials', ie fresh Uni from BC, fresh sweet shrimps from BC and yellowtail sashmi from Japan; and get the counter seats where you will be entertained by the 5-6 chefs bantering and cooking away in pure bliss!! It is intimidating for the Guuing first-timer mostly of the noise level but at the end of the evening, you stepped outside onto the street, you will be 'Lost in Silence' and can't wait to go back inside again and again.
