“This room tops the Romance Richter Scale...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 April 2011

Want to score high on the Romance Richter Scale? The Gladstone is an indulgent, urban experience with a colliding vibe of history and architecture in sexy spaces designed for couples wanting a cozy crash pad with a focus on the finer details of a hotel stay.

Coffee arrives on your doorstep at your requested morning hour, there are gourmet snacks to pillage in the room, ice delivery if need be (and it will be needed for the champagne!). The soaps are hand-milled from Prince Edward County and there is even a shampoo bar. There's an ipod docking station and a stillness to the room that was surprising given the original wood floors and age of the hotel.

Though we wandered down the street to the Drake Hotel Raw Bar for carb coma-inducing mac n'cheese and pumpkin stuffed ravioli, the Gladstone menu card spills over with indulgent choices too. The staff are bang-on with service, smiles and privacy.

As a Toronto resident, I was transported to many places. Quebec City? Chicago? San Francisco?

The rates are phenomenal for the luxury exchange.

There will be a return visit, this has already been determined. Each room is a unique microcosm of design--check it out!

Although very familiar with The Gladstone as an event and cultural space, this was our first overnight stay.
Absolutely unique artist-designed rooms: we stayed in Allyson Mitchell's "Faux Natural" and loved the fun-fur mural (which was immaculately clean).
Friendly and practical service makes up for lack of typical hotel-chain amenities; like free, great coffee delivered at the time you choose instead of in-room coffee-makers.
Probably not for everyone, but great for interesting people who enjoy a break from cookie-cutter hotels.

Room Tip: Rooms on Queen St are a bit noisy.

We stayed at the Gladstone for an wedding that was hosted in their ballroom. The "Felt Room" was tiny at only 185 sq ft but spacious enough for what we needed. A friend of ours stayed in the room on a cot also that we arranged between the bathroom and our bed. Sleep was very peaceful because it was very quiet in the hotel (despite our rowdy wedding guests)! We even got a late checkout! Staff was very gracious, especially the wait staff and bartender in the ballroom. Very neat decor not only in the rooms but the entire hotel. Restaurant in Lobby served a great breakfast for a fair price ($12.95 for bacon and eggs). The best part was after the wedding we took the original 1907 elevator up to our room and went to bed!

The Bride and Groom chose the Gladstone for their Rehearsal Dinner and rooms for out of towners [including themselves and ourselves] for their July wedding and I did the booking. The Dinner was a great success thanks to Penny Rose, outstanding food and drink and splendid waitstaff. The carefully chosen rooms [402,404,418] got high marks both for design and comfort. Our room [402 the Victorian setting] was so interesting we had a tour after the Dinner for interested guests - it was a hit. As others have noted, the building has many beautiful attributes, e.g. the wide main wooden staircase, winding around the glass antique elevator is stunning.

A great hotel needs a great staff and the Gladstone has stellar staff. The Front Desk is professional yet kind, the supervisor, Byron who checked us both in and out and his staff are willing to go the extra mile - e.g., Ricardo advising me on a room choice for my sister and Kara looking up needed internet information. We had a number of meals in both dining areas and all the waitstaff were attentive and enthusiastic.

Outside the hotel: 1) across the street is the Gladstone Cafe which solves any coffee, tea, snack needs 24/7 and 2) the Queen Streetcar which runs frequently, stops in front of the hotel going west and the stop directly across the street going east will connect you with any place the TTC goes. A fun area going east is a few blocks north of the Spadina Ave. stop - here you will find Chinatown, Kensington and the Art Gallery of Ontario - art, shop, eat - to your heart's content.

Yes, the Bride and Groom made an excellent choice.

We decided to get elope in Toronto and stayed in the Tower Suite of the Gladstone Hotel before heading away on our honeymoon. The 2 storey room was stunning in every way, the art galleries and other spaces of the hotel were amazing and the staff were very warm and accommodating. We were very impressed and would happily stay at the Gladstone again.
If you are considering spending the extra money and booking the Tower Suite for a romantic interlude, we highly recommend it!

This place has everything for the more adventurous traveler! The uniqueness of the rooms, the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff, the lovely cafe/bar and the wonderful elevator! It's an art gallery/hotel/entertainment centre all in one.
Some poor workmanship in some of the finishes (the wainscoting in the cafe didn't quite cover the lath and plaster under it) and the bathroom in the room had inadequate counter space, plus the windows were dirty, but that was all small stuff, especially when you consider the age of the place. The architectural detailing was wonderful. The beds were very comfortable, and the attention to environmental concerns was great.
Make sure you take advantage of the hand-delivered morning coffee...no more nasty "whitener"!!
