“Creative dishes, good taste, but over priced.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 December 2011

It's got one of the best decor in Toronto. The bar near the entrance is a really good place to have a Japanese beer before dinner. Service very professional too. There was this one redneck old lady customer beside my table making unreasonable demands. The waiters handled it very well, and was able to calm her down.

However, everything was over priced for the quality of food and the culinary skill of this restaurant. The presentation of all dishes are very pretty. But the kitchen tried too hard to be creative and over prepared everything, which I think sacrifices the genuineness of the ingredient. The beef is over cooked, the rice for the sushi is too sweet that over powers the freshness of the raw fish. The raw fish they used are very fresh, but they mixed this fruit sauce that goes with the sashimi made the fish taste awkward.

The dessert was a hit and miss. They should work with more Japanese ingredients such as sticky rice, red beans, pumpkins, green tea...etc.

Over all the dinning experience was just ok. I would go there again to just have a drink.

“Great Sushi, Tempura and unbelievable desert”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 March 2011

My husband and I went to Ame at the recommendation of the concierge at the Ritz Carlton. The restaurant was fantastic. We had nigiri, maki, sashimi, tempura, edamame, and desert. The shrimp tempura was probably the best I have ever had. The sashimi came with different sauces than I was used to but it was great. We had intended to skip on desert but the waiter recommended it and it was so good ... I highly recommend the peanut chocolate and banana.

We had great service and they were very accommodating - we came very early and needed to be out early to be able to make our theatre performance.

“Avoid the tempura”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 March 2011

Had a mix of dishes (sushi, fish, etc). In general the food was good, not outstanding. However, the squash tempura was nearly inedible. The presentation was interesting, and the tempura was hot (so freshly made), but it was too greasy to eat.

“Very disappointing”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 February 2011

This was not a great experience and with all the choices available in Toronto, Ame really needs to improve on their service or they will follow the same fate as Rain. Our party of 4 received 3 dinners together and the 4th meal 20 minutes later. I am not kidding it was 20 minutes later despite bringing the matter to the attention of our waiter. We discussed the matter with the manager and he told us the next time (as if we will be returning) we should advise our waiter we would like to receive our meals together. Is that not the standard protocol at most restaurants? Anyway, we will not be returning and would recommend others save their time and money and instead try another restaurant in the area. There is really no need to go to Ame. It is third rate at best!!!

“I highly recommend Ame for its food, décor and suavely warm ambience without pretension.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 January 2011

The delicious food, which would surely appeal to the most discriminating palate, features Japanese cuisine with modern yet traditionally respectful twists, and is accompanied by an attentive service in a stylishly sublime & inviting environment. It's located in a historic landmark building once home to the first women's prison in Toronto. Obviously (and thankfully) it no longer looks like a prison.

As you walk in through the huge solid oak doors, a lobby desk made of natural raw rock greets you and is a sign of great things to come as you proceed into the vast space whose numerous & breathtaking sight-lines eventually culminate to the gorgeous open kitchen on the far back wall. Jaw-dropping first impression. The interior décor is an eclectic yet harmonious mix of styles comprised of polished concrete floors, zen-like floor-to-ceiling untreated wooden beams and matching wood table countertops, wrought iron partitions reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright, simple yet unobtrusively dramatic urban lighting consisting of bulbs hung on long cords, retro chic gargantuan decorative mirrors adorning the walls and richly coloured seat & back cushions. Seems like my native Toronto is catching up to New York & Montréal restaurants’ standards of interior design. I felt transported into another city.

The food menu is plentiful with sushi, sashimi, nigiri, robata grill, hot kitchen, salads, tempura, noodles & rice. We asked our server to suggest something from each part of the menu and all of his choices were succulent. A special nod to the delectable miso black cod.

I highly recommend this place for its food, décor and suavely warm ambience without pretension. Although your wallet might suffer a bit after your meal at Ame, it's worth it.
