“Simply the best”
Reviewed 29 December 2011

You will not find a better bed and breakfast place any where. Simply the best in every way. Clement is an absolute gem of a human being who delights with stories, information and then there are the breakfasts!!!! They are small masterpieces cooked with the fine ingredients from downstairs. It is almost worth the cost of an airfare from New Zealand to Quebec just for the croissant or the fresh smoothie. Brilliantly situated, Clement tells you how to approach the city and then explains the history and politics behind it all. On our last day we had a very early flight and he was up at 5.30 man handling our luggage downstairs, kissing and waving us off. I hope I live long enough to make it back.

Furnishing and decoration of our room and the living room was exceptional. Our host Mr. Clemente shared a lot of information about Quebec and the history of Canada and always had good recomendations where to go and to eat and....

My wife and I stayed at Auberge J.A. Moisan on a recent trip to Quebec. Everything about this bed and breakfast was superb. The owner, Clement Saint-Laurent is a man of exceptional gentility and kindness. When we arrived, he spent a half hour just advising us on what to see, how to get to various places, and where to dine. The breakfasts, prepared by his wife, are first rate and change from day to day. Clement was always at our disposal during our stay. As an example of how he goes beyond the usual, I was having a problem with one of my car's tires losing air. I tried two service stations but they refused to help me. When I mentioned this to Clement, he contacted his own mechanic and got him to repair my tire before my departure, giving me peace of mind for my return drive to New York.
Guests are permitted the run of the house--living room, TV room, etc. Clement even made it possible for me to use each of two easily accessible computers. Yes, a most positive experience indeed!

JA Moisan is situated a short distance outside the ‘City Wall’ but is very central. Adjacent the accommodation is the [famous] JA Moisan Grocery Store / café. We often ate and shopped there. It is ideal if you only want a light meal although having said that, there is so much variety that it is hard to choose what not to eat. We also liked the restaurant / bar ‘La Hobbit’ which is almost directly opposite. So, not very far to travel at the end of the day.

We visited between 22 and 25 June 2011 (3 nights). Our first 2 nights were spent in ‘Ludovine’ and the final night in ‘Amelia’. Although Ludovine was our first choice, we preferred Amelia given it has a larger bathroom (although slightly smaller bedroom).
We have stayed in numerous B&B’s throughout Canada / North America; all of which have been of a high standard. A common feature is both the quality of accommodation and friendliness of the proprietors. JA Moisan is in a class of its own; largely on account of Clément, the owner. Throughout our stay, he proved to be a most charming and attentive host. Shortly after arrival, Clément took considerable care to point out the various highlights of Quebec City together with some of the nitty-gritty stuff, such as the ‘electric buses’. It was apparent that he treated all of his guests very well and was always on hand to assist with sightseeing queries. The guest bedrooms are a little compact but this is compensated for by the many other guest areas on the first floor; all of which are appointed to the highest (authentic) standard. Clément is a very pleasant and interesting person, and we found his demeanour invigorating. So much so that we were genuinely sad to leave. If / when we return to Quebec City, we would not consider anywhere else to stay.

If arriving by car you can park right outside the accommodation as it is a loading / unloading area. When you are ready Clément will take your car and secure it in an underground car park where he has [free] reserved spaces. This is very useful as we didn’t need to use the car while in the City.

There are people for whom pleasure is derived primarily by the act of giving pleasure to others. In my estimation, the proprietor of J.A. Moisan must surely be one of those people. From the moment of our arrival to to the moment of our departure, when he pulled our car around for us, and even the quick "didn't expect to see you again so soon, but after having driven off, we realized we forgot to return our key, thanks again!" exchange, our host met and exceeded our needs with care, capability, and graciousness. Everything about the place resonates with love for the history of Quebec and the attention to detail is at a level I have not encountered anywhere else I have stayed. And the food, the FOOD! :-) If you stay here, I cannot imagine a scenario in which you would be sorry you did. We absolutely loved it and hope to return, perhaps for a winter's visit.

Room Tip: The room with the tub does not have a shower, but the tub is one of the old claw foot bathtubs that...

We arrived in Quebec late at night, and as we drove through the streets looking for the b&b, we got amazed by the splendor and beauty of this town. No less amazed were we when found the J.A.MOISAN. A charming house located at Rue Saint-Jean, a street full of spices shops, among all the J.A.MOISAN's spices shop is the most impressive by the variety of products it gathers. It is also the oldest spices shop in America. The b&b is on the upper floors. Passing through the door and climbing up the stairs you enter Monsieur Clement's Petit Palais. Victorian decorated to the perfection in all details, it involves you in a cozy and warm atmosphere. We took our bags to one of the four rooms availible witch had the name of Amelie, the rooms don't have numbers but names, a clear example of how every detail in there, is very well thought. After that we came downstairs again to enjoy a little bit that environment before going to sleep. One of it's living rooms is got a table with a variety of high quality teas and hot water that you may taste anytime while listening to a very soft calssical music fitted with the tic-tacs of some anthique watches. The hole thing added by the incredible courtesy, sympathy and helpfulness of Monsieur Clement makes the experience unique. But the most impressive was still to come. The following morning we woke up and had the best breakfast of our lives. A sequence of three dishes served french style by the host himself and cooked by his wife and great chef nataly, in all crystal glasses, porcelain plates and silver cutlery make you wonder if you deserve all that. Resuming, if you need lots of space you'd better go to the big castle but if it's excellency and a personalized treatment you're looking for, than the J.A.MOISAN is surely second to none.

Room Tip: every room is ifferent and yet no one is less charming than any other.
