“Best lunch in Quebec City!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 October 2010

After three days in Quebec City and trying several restaurants recommended on Tripadvisor, we found ourselves at the doorstep of Le Pain Beni at lunch time today. My boyfriend and I each had one of the lunch specials, for $14 and $15 respectively which include an appetizer, entree, dessert and coffee or tea, I don't know how you can go wrong! We both agreed this was the best meal we have had in Quebec City so far. The quality of food, presentation and service were excellent! We had actually gone into the Crepe restaurant beside the Chateau Frontenac first fully intending to have lunch, but after seeing prices like $17 for a crepe alone, and finding the restaurant completely empty at 12:30, we changed our mind and left. I'm so glad we did! Lovely atmosphere at Le Pain Beni and it was almost full of local business people, not just tourists.

“Mediocrity at its finest”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2010

What are the positive reviews of this place for?? My hubby and I went for lunch, expecting great things. I ordered the salami pizza. What I got was the 3-cheese pizza, and a waitress who never came to check on my order. We were in a hurry, so I didn't complain. The pizza was HORRIBLE. The crust was barely done, almost raw- not browned at all. The pizza had cheese and sauce, and that was it. No salt, no seasoning, no basil. It was like something kids eat at a rollerrink party. And it was overpriced $14 for cardboard? Hubby had a chicken, tomato, and proscuitto sandwich that was ok, but lacking in execution. The chicken was WAY dry and the cheese was only partially melted. HIs dessert, some kind of rhubarb custard, was gross. Way below average food, and horribly overpriced. Would not go back under any circumstances.

Bonjour,
Thank you for your comment, input from our guests keeps us alert and helps us to correct week points. According to the day menu, you came in yesterday for lunch. You seem to have forgotten to mention that your husband had a three course menu, including soup, a homemade cream of mushroom or a feta, cheese and avocado salad, sandwich and dessert plus tea or coffee. Frankly, at 14$ for a 3 courses meal I think it would have more expensive to lunch at a McDo and we are not commenting on the fare.
You ordered a pizza, available on the summer daily menu. It appears that there was a misunderstanding on the type of pizza and for that we apologize. You ordered à la carte and were served and billed a three cheese pizza with parmesan, mozzarella and goat cheese, but this type of pizza does not have basil, because we want the clients to taste distinctly each type of cheese. On the menu it is written thin crust so yes the crust is crusty, the European way of eating pizza and if was undercook again apologize. It should have been very evident, when you received the pizza, that it was not what you ordered. It would have been so simple to mention it then and we would have changed it rapidly. You say that you were in a hurry and we would have reacted rapidly, once made aware of that fact. We cannot guess people situation and tourists are seldom in a hurry. You do not seem to have had more luck at the Echaudé although it is a good restaurant. We are very sorry that you did not succeed in getting a meal to your taste in Québec city, although we are known as a city where you can eat very well.
A last point since my mother and I are always there, when you received the bill should have asked for the manager and we would at that moment apologize to you and gladly adjust the bill. We put so much heart in what we do, we try to give to best food and service possible as you can read in the other reviews.

“Delightful Evening”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2010

Six of us dined at the Pain Beni and it was an excellent evening after the bizarre episode at the La Cremaillere the previous night. The structure is newly rebuilt and the décor is contemporary and tasteful. The waitress was pleasant and patient. My lobster risotto was filled with so many subtle tastes that my mouth is watering again just thinking about it. The price was reasonable for a wonderful evening. The only surprise was the washroom, which was impeccable but you must experience that for yourself.

“Overall a very positive experience...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2010

Overall a very positive experience. Thank you Kathy for taking such good care of us. The food was delicious, especially the parfait glace for desert, which capped off the night nicely.

The atmosphere was just what we wanted. Nice French music, low lights, interesting paintings and decor, and tables spaced out appropriately. It was intimate, yet not pretentious.

The table d'hote was a real bargain, allowing us to share an appetizer, salad and desert while each choosing our own main courses. This solidly pushed our rating for value up a grade. With two meals, salad, appetizer, desert, coffee and a half liter of wine, our bill came to $95 before tip. This was quite reasonable for the experience, one worth having.

“Original and delicious.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 October 2010

We stopped for lunch while walking around the city. What a find. Wished we had time to go for dinner too. I know lunch isn't truly representative of a great restaurant but if their dinners are close to as good, then this has to be the best restaurant in Quebec. The flavors, freshness, and presentation of all meals were perfect. Our favorite part, of course, desert which we unfortunately shared, was a coconut rice on mango puree. This desert also included wasabi peas, sugar coated nuts, strawberries, and green tea sorbet. Not sure how they came up with it, but they deserve a medal of honor, or at least a raise.

Price was reasonable. We ate on the street, under heated lamps. Very close to the Frontenac. Staff can speak English. Only negative was our waiter obviously didn't care about his service, but the food helped us forget about him.
