“Awesome place to vacation with the pooches!”
Reviewed 19 January 2010

I'm finally getting around to writing a review, but to cut to the chase, we've already booked our next visit for May 2010!

We HATE leaving our dogs behind when we travel, so this was a perfect fit for us. First off, the owners and staff are fabulous and go out of their way to make you and your dogs feel comfortable and welcome. The cabins themselves are great. Extremely clean upon check in - you'd never know that there are always dogs staying in them! Furthermore, they are all situated perfectly to give you privacy, which is nice when you're relaxing in the hot tub.

The grounds were impeccably clean and well maintained. It is so nice to have a place to let your dogs run totally free. We would tire the dogs out early in the a.m., and then head out on our own later, knowing that they were comfortably sleeping back at the cabin. So many other "pet friendly" places have very specific rules about not leaving dogs unattended, but at Barkwells it was OK to do so and it made things so much more relaxing and enjoyable for us.

I thought the location was great, as far as Asheville, Biltmore, Lake Lure/Chimney Rock, Hendersonville, Brevard, etc. It's a bit of a drive to GSMNP and Gatlinburg, but there is just so much other great hiking and things to do nearby anyway. (Note: dogs are not allowed on most hiking trails in GSMNP). It was great to come home at the end of the day and relax on our porch/in the hot tub.

We unfortunately had horrible weather the week we were there in Sept 2009, but we knew right away that we wanted to give the area another shot this Spring, and hopefully we'll get much better weather. Without hesitation, we booked another week at Barkwells.

My only complaint (if you want to call it that) and the reason I rated the rooms only a "4" is that the couches in the cabin we stayed in weren't the most comfortable. There was one chair w/ ottoman which was fine, but the couch was more of a loveseat-sized futon-type of furniture, and wasn't great for laying down/stretching out. But all in all, a minor inconvenience as far as I'm concerned - afterall, I didn't go on vacation to lay around on a couch all week!

Highly recommend Barkwells, even if you're not traveling with pets!

If you have dogs than you know how they become part of your family....so much so that you dread leaving them in a kennel (no matter how nice) in order to go on vacation. Luckily, Barwells fills an untapped need in travel...a dog friendly vacation resort in beautiful Asheville, NC. Not only are dogs welcome but they are encouraged to have full run of the grounds...which is completely fenced and has a man-made lake in the center. Our dogs exhausted themselves running laps around the lake and diving in for tennis balls....that when we left to explore the local attractions our dogs were too soundly asleep to notice. The resort is a quick 20-30 minute drive to all the local attractions to include Asheville, the Biltmore House, Chimney Rock, Grandfather Mountain, Brevard, etc. You can explore on your own or in many surprising cases (the grounds of the Biltmore, restaurants in Asheville) take your dogs. We are such suckers for our dogs that we would stay in a tent in order to vacation with them...but luckily Barkwells is an extreme step up. The cabins are beautiful and stocked with EVERYTHING a family or dogs could need...to include plastic poo bags and dog towels and a full kitchen stocked with dishes, pots, pans and utensils. There is even a massage therapist who will travel to the resort and a hot-tub to relax in after hiking. It is perfect spot for dogs and dog lovers alike! We can''t wait to go back!

2 Paws Up! We stayed in the Diva Cabin from 12/22 - 12/27/08 with our two dogs. The cabin had everything we needed including a Christmas tree for the holidays. The cabin was very comfortable. This is definitely a dog lover’s location; extremely dog friendly and such a pleasure to meet our families and their dogs. The location was great for short trips for us well the dogs rested from their morning romp outside. We will definitely do this again, highly recommend it. Next time, we would pack less clothing, we used the washer/dryer since we were always getting dirty with the dogs, less food (restaurants in the area are great plus grocery store is close by) and pack more dog towels/sheets since we used them often wiping the dogs paws down when they came in from outside. Each guest is responsible for their dogs including pickup and straightening up the cabin before departure. We can't wait to go again. This definitely an over the top vacation for our dogs.
