Arriving at the Mangapapa Hotel was like a dream. This beautiful old estate house—formerly owned by the founder of Wattie's Baked Beans—has been beautifully renovated to become a top hotel for the region. Rooms were spacious and luxurious wth modern amenities balanced with vintage and antique decor. Afternoon tea is a must as is at least one dinner at the hotel restaurant where Irish-native Chef, Paul Condron has a deft hand at continental fare with local, seasonal ingredients. The wine list is a fantastic as well.

Best of all, the service. We bacon well acquainted with GM, David Thompson, who helped arrange a few site-seeing experiences and activities including and Art Deco Tour of Hawke's bay in vintage cars from the Art Deco Trust, a view of Cape Kidnappers and an afternoon of Clay Shooting and instruction through Hau Ora Clay Shooting.

The rooms were beautifully decorated and very comfortable. At the time they were updating part of the property to include a spa and I can't wait to see how that turns out.

Perhaps most memorable was that NZ experienced a 7.8 Earthquake. It woke us all from a sound sleep in the middle of the night. Though the epicenter was near Kaikoura on the South Island, it was felt all the way in Hawke's Bay. Not having ever been in an earthquake before, the experience was surreal. But Thompson, who had remained on site for the night took great care of us, not only looking out for his own family, but make sure we were all safe for a precautionary evacuation due to fears of a potential tsunami along the Eastern coastline.

I can't speak highly enough about our time at Mangapapa. I can't wait to go back.

Hi Jess,
Thank you so much for your 5* rating - we are pleased to hear you were looked after during that emergency situation - it's certainly not the norm but we have procedures in place and a duty of care for our guests if situations do occur. Great that it do not dampen your experience and you enjoyed a lot of what Hawke's Bay has to offer with our wonderful Art Deco style, great food and beautiful wine plus the stunning scenery with all the outdoor activities to do. Mangapapa is a great base to enjoy all of that from with it's added bit of luxury. We look forward to your return visit. Thank you so much again.

Kind regards,
The Mangapapa Team

Just 2 nights here as a special treat for my wife's birthday. We couldn't have asked for a better place. Beautiful property, recently renovated but still with the charm of a grand old building. The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient, and (that rarest of finds in New Zealand) the service was amazing.

The restaurant was great, a real experience and a wonderful 5 course dinner (although we counted at least 7 different dishes) all explained by the actual chef as they came out. Breakfast was fantastic too, as was the coffee.

If you are like us - average kiwis who always try to save money when traveling - then you must make a night or 2 here something to do one day. Shout yourself! It was totally worth it, you will feel like you've stepped into an amazing lifestyle that only the rich and famous get to experience. You deserve it! At least for a short time.

We were sad when we had to leave....

Hi Gster737,

Your review has the whole hotel team on top of the world and extremely happy! We really care about ensuring your Mangapapa stay is the best it could be and its wonderful to hear how much you enjoyed your time here. Yes Chef does tend to create a few extra little courses at dinner, that is the beauty of having such a talented team. Thank you for your kind words and we hope to see you again in the future.
The (very happy), Mangapapa Team :)

We spent a Friday & Saturday night at the hotel in late June. On both nights it was very quiet - with only one other couple staying on each night.
We were fortunate to be upgraded to a suite when we arrived. The hotel is the ex-residence of a very successful local residence, and the owners have done a good job of maintaining the grandeur of the past.
Whilst the service was not "polished", it was certainly very genuine and pleasant.
We dined both nights in the hotel, including the 5 course degustation menu the second night. The chef at the restaurant is a real asset - with great flavours coming through each of the dishes.

Thank you Bruce for your kind words, we take a lot of pride in keeping the property pristine and look after it well, as it is such a special place for Hawke's Bay. Yes you timed your visit well, in our off-peak season and glad you enjoyed your complimentary room upgrade. Hope to see you again in the future, perhaps to try more of Chef's fantastic creations. Thank you again, the Mangapapa Hotel Team.

This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in , and we have stayed in many all over the world. We were fortunate to have our room upgraded to a suit which was superb, beautifully appointed and extremely comfortable. The staff were delightful, courteous yet unobtrusive. Breakfast was delicious, as was the one dinner we ate on our first night. All in beautiful surroundings both internally and externally. We spent three nights here for a few days relaxation during our tour of New Zealand and it was perfect. Just wish we could have stayed longer!

Thank you so much TimeTraveller86 for such great feedback. We are blown away with your wonderful words, 'one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in'. So pleased you enjoyed your upgrade and the service along with our scrumptious food. It certainly is a beautiful spot here, and its great to see the property change throughout the seasons, so perhaps a return trip in the Summer could be on the cards? Until next time, thank you so much for your wonderful words. from The Mangapapa Team
