“Perfect retreat in the Basque Country”
Reviewed 27 September 2011

We had a wonderful stay with Alberto, his wife, and the staff. They were warm, inviting and genuine. We appreciated the care and the details that went into the design/ architecture upgrades throughout the property. A definite must if you are visiting the Basque region.

Hotel Urune is located in a wonderful forested and hilly part of northern Spain, the property is at the end of a lovely farm road and from the back garden you get the most magical views. The hosts were welcoming and showed us around the hotel and how everything worked.

The hotel is marketed as a place of serenity, somewhere to relax and reflect, which is exactly what it felt like when we arrived. The bedroom was small but well equipped and had some lovely olive oil-based bathroom products. Another plus is they offer you are kinds of little snacks and drinks if you feel peckish during the day.

Now for the negatives - some of the windows were too high for us to reach and the curtains/shutters were open so we had direct sunlight on us early in the morning, this is a minor detail but something for hosts to think about when they prepare rooms. The room had no AC and since it was in the attic it got especially hot but you are warned not to keep windows open as mosquitos could come in, and finally (the most annoying aspect) the walls are PAPER thin, not just normal thin! So during the night I heard - a couple speaking softly in bed, the TV, moving suitcases around on the floor, the windows opening and closing, the toilet flushing, the shower going on, someone shaving, a baby crying...and the list goes on. Its so frustrating to me for a place that ticks so many boxes and sells itself as a place of relaxation to then not think of ensuring the rooms are quiet when one wants to sleep.

So overall, a wonderful experience if you are a deep sleeper but if not....bring earplugs (and ask for a quieter room) to enjoy the beautiful surroundings.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room and maybe one on the bottom floor if its hot

A peaceful rural location yet close to Gernika. The owners, Alberto and his wife, and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Alberto also spoke good English - useful as our Spanish/Basque is very poor. Very good breakfast buffet. Free tea, coffee, fruit and cakes all day. Great when we got in after a busy day's sightseeing (there's a lot to do and see in this beautiful area). Dinner (need to request as they buy specially - great fish as we are not meat eaters) was superb and good value. Our room was extremely comfortable with very nice bath products provided. This was a lovely place to stay and we were sorry to leave.

This is a Hotel Rural two star bed and breakfast ( and afternoon tea). Evening meals can be cooked with prior notice. It appears to be a recently converted/ part new build and the surprise is the quality of the fit out and the cleanliness. The staff have limited english but with our limited spanish as well we got reasonable advice and help.Only problem is to pick up the turning off the main road. Breakfasts were cold spreads of very high quality.
