Guide book says take bus from metro station, but bus to Gatchina loads in 'front' of Soviet House (a block north), not outside the Moskovskaya metro itself (those are returning). When you get to Gatchina town there are several stops before palace. Bus will take left, then a right at an obelisk. Palace on right. To get return bus go back down to the obelisk where there is a covered stop. Look for your number returning. At palace entrance is at the left corner of courtyard. Your ticket will admit you to gardens and maybe other sites there also. You can see restored and damaged parts of palace.

Definitely one of the top 5 places to see in and around Saint Pete. During the tour it was shocking to see only Russian language groups, as it seems that travel agencies and foreign tourists simply ignore this palace. Yes, it is the last in line for restauration funds (relative to Pushkin, Petrodvorets, Pavlovsk and Hermitage) and remains work in progress, but this is the only former czar palace which is rather a castle and indeed resembles a smaller version of Versailles.
Great guides, interesting history, real feeling of the restauration works and the unique underground cellar experience. Treat yourself!

I was very glad I could find time to visit this palace and follow an excusion telling about the history of the place, and about the efforts the museum keepers made to preserve the museum at German siege of Gatchina and SPb in 1941 - the museum workers continued work at exhibits evaquation even at the time when fascist army was already in the town of Gatchina, so they made it possible that the museum is open at present time.
