Rumah Cantik came at the end of a long trip to Indonesia, and was the perfect ending. Jette, Made and the staff have really perfected the art of running a B&B that people want to come back to. We so much appreciated the generous and nicely presented breakfasts (I mentioned that I'd like to try a mangosteen and they appeared the next day), Jette's advice on where to go and what to see, the lovely gardens, the driving tours ($65 for the day, whereever you want to go), the availability of drinks and snacks (anytime between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.), the INCREDIBLE Balinesian meal (don't miss this), the cooking class! Really, I can’t get over what a wonderful job they all did.
Above and beyond - when our air conditioning went out, they gave us another room for sleeping and didn't charge us for that night, OR for the magnficent Balinese meal the staff prepared (and served to us on a romantically lit patio, despite having to run through the rain to reach us!).
Two of the staff, Made and Putu, put together an impromptu cooking class for me, teaching me how to make corn fritters and "fried chicken" - two of our favorites from the big meal. The staff are ALL great cooks - be sure to take advantage of the small menu they offer, which includes really reasonable local wines and beers, homemade cake and brownies, a wonderful club sandwich, etc.
Also, they have a masseuse who'll do a 60 minute massage in your room or by the pool - for less than $10. Yes, $10. I had to ask if that was a misprint.
When you leave, they give YOU a gift! Mine included several pieces of palm sugar (yes, I know, Customs doesn't like that). it's really good stuff - apparently the next new thing in sweeteners (a "healthy" sugar), and quite expensive here.
Location is good - only a block from the main drag through Lovina. About a 10 minute walk to the main shopping area and good restaurants and shopping.
And all of that for $85 a night.
Rumah Cantik is a kind, fun, and generous place.
