Its a track which isnt marked, and its a steep rough track up and over the headland. The track is at the far north of the beach at low tide. But the mermaid pools at low tide are stunning. The volcanic rock means these are clear and warm. We visited over Easter so they were busy - but still plenty of space and room. Worth visiting if it is low tide and you are in the area.
they arent safe in rough windy weather, and only safe to visit near low tide.

Missed out on a visit to the Mermaid pool as it is only accessible during low tide (with small kids in tow).

Walk out to Mermaid Pool ...a steep walk up and over but worth it. Incredible clear water and very safe swimming.

Matapouri has it all...the estuary to explore and rocks at it’s Southern aspect and then the great golden expanse of it’s sands stretching to the other end of the beach where there are more rocky delights to be found amongst pohutukawas and little miniature bays and, of course, the mermaid pool. From Matapouri you can walk to Whale Bay ( see next post ) which is a whole other amazing experience in itself. It is such a beautiful beach and only a 30 minute drive from Whangarei.

There are several access points to Matapouri beach and it a nice stretch of sand which is well protected and not too rough a sea. The estuary is another access point further along from the main beach and this is even more sheltered.
