The "Grutas de Tzabnah" are about a 45 minute drive from Merida and are easily combined with the tour of Hacienda Sotuta de Peon, which is about 15 minutes away.
My ten-year-old daughter and I LOVED these caves. It takes about 1.5 hours and you get really dirty, but it's not as difficult as the guidebooks suggest. You have to crawl through a few passageways and use ropes in a few spots... but you get to see a series of 10 underground cenotes, some with rare blind white fish and eels, and then go for a refreshing swim in the last cenote. It's a marvel. Meanwhile, an enthusiastic Mayan guide will point out all the Virgin Marys and other natural iconography formed by the stalagmites and stalagtites. He charged a ridiculously low amount of money - 100 pesos - but we paid him twice that just for the great tour.
Directions: Pass through town of Tecoh, south on main highway. Grutas are about 2km outside of the town, past the secondary school.
