West Hill Bungalows
Reviewed 28 May 2011

I went to Curacao with 2 good friends in April 2011, for staying 2 weeks at Westhill Bungalows.
Our decision choosing West Hill Bungalows was the fact that we wanted to have 2 chilly weeks to relax in natural surrounding, without urban city noises. In Westhill Bungalows this is what you get.
On the other hand, we had some really friendly and professional mails with norman, the owner of the bungalows, who was really kind when we planned the trip to curacao and of course when we went there.
After being back again in the busy and frantic european working environment where time is money, I would rather buy time in Curacao, instead of having no time but money.
With in 10 minutes walking you can reach the knip beach, one of the most beautifullest beaches I've ever seen, there are also several good restaurants round westpunt and if you want to go to willemstad for shopping or in the supermarket, there is always the option to rent a car or take the bus.
So we had a really great time in westhill bungalows, the bungalows where always clean, norman took his time to give us suggestions about what to do in Curacao and was always friendly answering our questions.
In the end, we were searching for something calm and natural and with our decision to go to westhill bungalows, we found exactly what we were searching for.
I can recommend Westhill Bungalows to everybody who want to take some days off, relax, chill, go swimming, enjoy good food and especially life.

My husband and I stayed at West Hill Bungalows in April. We had been to Curacao several times before, usually staying at one of the high end resorts. But we decided to get off the beaten path this trip and are very happy with that decision. This has been our favorite place to stay. The hospitility of the staff was wonderful. What they don't have any upscale amenities, they make up for in their willingness to accomodate and their desire to make your vacation enjoyable.

The grounds are very nicely landscaped and the pool was crystal clear. The bungalows are very cozy - hardwood floors, spacious bath, nicely supplied kitchen. We kept our shuttered windows open most of the time for the nice breeze (A/C only in bedrooms). I would recommend that you bring body soap, shampoo, and OFF or citronella supplies. Housekeeping does not come through daily (and we liked the privacy), but on the day she did, we were suprised with a heart made of flowers on our bed.

We spent mornings on our patio with hummingbirds buzzing by us as we enjoyed coffee, fresh pastries, and banans that Norman picked from the grounds. During they day, we'd go to diving, have lunch, and hang out at one of the nearby beaches. We spent most evenings back on our patio with wonderful French wine and Dutch cheese. I would recommend doing your grocery shopping before you arrive or shortly after if possible. The good restaurants in the area are open only on the weekend. Several dive spots and beaches are a short drive away, and we think this is the most beautiful area of the island (which was why we looked for a hotel in this area) . I would definately recommend renting a car, no matter where you chose to stay. And finally, although we already had our trip planned out, I appreciated that Norman was willing to help us make arrangements for rentals, schedule boat trips, and would go the extra mile to make sure we were happy.

We stayed at the Bungalows in late April 2011. Our experience is consistent with other reviews - wonderful place, wonderful people, a real bargain. We enjoyed meeting the owner and the staff. It's definitely on our list to visit again.

A few highlights/tips/observations
- Overall, Curacao is a very nice place. Norman described it as a "little bit of everything", and that feels about right. Felt like a tiny bit of Holland to me somehow.
- a car is highly recommended. There are several really good beaches a few minutes away by car. The capital, Willemstad, is an hour away by car, and we found ourselves there almost every night. It's worth the drive.
- a good road map is a must. The road signs are.. economical, esp. on the west side of the island.
- The gas stations are cash or local gas card mostly. I think I saw one or two gas stations hat take credit cards.
- The closest place to get food is the California mini-market. It's adequate. There is, however, a much better place closer to Willemstad, a US-style supermarket. It's difficult to describe exactly where it is without a map, but it's easy to get there, and the choice of is much better. The prices are better, too.
- The locals celebrated the Easter holidays by camping on beaches - tents, barbeques, TVs, XBoxen, what have you. We worked around it by going to other places for these two days, as the beaches were packed. The weather was cloudy, so it all worked out.
- we found the snorkeling options somewhat limited. The island seems to be more of a diving site - apparently it's one of the best scuba places in Caribbean.
- We thought the best local restaurant is Landhuis Misje. You do need a reservation - they only have five or six tables. It is well worth the trouble. The menu says the oxtail stew is "must try before you die", and we found that to be true.
- Dining options in Willemsted vary widely. The best deal for a full-service seems to be the outside cafe on the Punta side, a block or two away from the bridge. Nothing fancy, but good food, reasonable choice of beer, including one or two Belgian brands, and lots of choices for kids. The other place we liked is Mr. Congas, a Cuban place in the old fort on the Punta side. Excellent mojitos, the food is very good. We thought the stuffed fish was outstanding, but everything else was pretty good too.
- If you get a chance, visit the ostrich farm. It's off the beaten track, but worth the visit. The restaurant at the farm is pretty good, too.
- The national parks, such as Shete Boka are definitely worth a visit. You can drive around, but if you can, park at the main parking and hike instead. caves next to the airport are worth a visit as well.

Overall, this has been a very nice vacation for not a lot of money. Highly recommended.

My spouse and I stayed at West Hill Bungalows for 11 days in March, 2011, our first trip to the charming country of Curacao. We'd initially planned to stay at the Bungalows for one week, and then to spend our final 4 days in Willemstad, but once we discovered the "West Punt vibe," we saw no reason to leave West Hill!

Norman, our host, is a wonderfully friendly, personable, helpful, committed lover of nature and people. Born and raised in Curacao, he speaks all four national languages (Papiamentu, Dutch, English, and Spanish), and will do anything to make your stay more comfortable, enjoyable, and lovely. To say he loves what he does, and also loves Curacao, is to reveal the secret behind the love and serenity that you can find at West Hill Bungalows.

We decided not to rent a car, which definitely limited our access to the many sites and beaches across the island. We don't recommend doing this, but something wonderful happened to us as a result: Norman connected us with Danny, a local fisherman and retired social worker, born and raised in West Punt, whom we paid to give us rides here & there when we wanted to explore further beaches and sites. Danny is a kindhearted and dignified Curacaoan, who teased us, brought us fish he caught, and shared honey from his bee hives with us. It was a pleasure to hear his stories about growing up in West Punt.

We actually enjoyed being disconnected - no phone, no car, no internet. This is not everyone's cup of tea, but we walked a lot, hung out at the Bungalows and read books around the pool, and chatted with the other guests. The local Playa Forti is an easy walk from the Bungalows, and we loved being there with local kids and Curacaoans who flock to West Punt from Willemstad on weekends (wear a hat and lots of sunblock!).

West Hill Bungalows is a little treasure. Great for those of us who like to travel off the beaten path.

Our trip to Curacao was made special by the wonderful people we met: Curacaoans and fellow travelers from all around the world. Especially the proprietor of West Hill Bungalows, Norman. He made our visit to Westpunt a welcoming experience and his excitement about the terrific living to experience on the western end of Curacao elevated our adventure. The western coast has a number of beautiful public beaches modest in size and enclosed by small cliffs. There is great seafood to be had as well as interesting local meals like iguana at a half dozen restaurants on the west point.
Thank you, Norman and all our friends that brought out our smiles.

I stayed at West Hill with two friends for ten days and it was the perfect accommodation for us. We were so close to the most gorgeous beaches and the nearest all-inclusive, party-all-night, gamble-all-day casinos were at the other end of the island. The bungalows are the perfect size, are practically brand new (Norman is the architect who designed them and they were built less than a year ago), and so inviting. We actually spent much less time at the beach than imagined because it was so relaxing to sit on the porch and read and/or gaze at the Carribean Sea. The kitchen made it easy to prepare our own meals, and there were some great restaurants near-by when we wanted to eat out.

Susannah and Norman were so helpful before we arrived, and Norman was especially gracious when we got there (unfortunately, we didn't have the pleasure of meeting Susannah). He gave us a tour of West Point, and even met us one day to give us a tour of Willemstad. His guests' comfort and well-being are of utmost importance, and he was a great host.

My one complaint is that, because there aren't any phones at West Hill, and the facility doesn't have a concierge-type employee, it was difficult at times to make reservations at the nicer restaurants and deal with unexpected travel difficulties. As accommodating and responsive as Norman is, he doesn't live on or near the property, so we couldn't ask him for help. We actually ended up at the Kura Hurlanda Lodge (fancy schmancy--but not oboxious--nearby resort) a few times and asked them for directions/maps/suggestions or to make calls for us. Ruth, the woman at the front desk, was extremely helpful and gracious. She even let us use the internet for free because the only other internet available to us (at a local restaurant) wasn't working.

If you want a quiet, relaxing, non-commercial, (literally) off-the-beaten-path vacation, this is a great place to stay. I highly recommend it and cherish the memories of my stay!

Room Tip: Ask for Bungalow 9. If not available, ask for #6.

First, a remark to save time: if you love ALL INCLUSIVE and have never
tried anything else, this is not a destination tailored for you and
you can skip reading this review.
If you love nature and want to experience something different than All
Inclusive resorts or going camping with a tent, then West Hill
Bungalows is the right place.
It lies in the middle of nature (read: birds wake you up early in the
morning, insects crawl or fly around, rabbits jump over the road,
iguanas lie in the sun), on a hill near Westpunt, just 45 min from
A car is a must - practically all around is only reachable driving: restaurants
(Rancho El Sobrino, etc.) 5-10 min, supermarkets (Barber-Centrum, Tera
Cora - Big New Market) 10-30 min, beaches (Knip Bay, Porto Mari) 5-30
Our hosts are lovely and provide all the information and support you
need. However, after only 1-2 days, you will already know most of the
island, if you drive around a bit.
Beware of 2 things: only 2 tank stations are around and only one in
Barber accepts cash, other one only cards from local banks; second, besides the El
Sobrino Ranch/Restaurant, you either have to make reservation at restaurants or the
kitchen takes the last order at 7PM.
If you are to late in the evening, you might end up cooking by yourself.
There are nine bungalows, each having a master bedroom, a second bedroom and
a kitchen/living room and a terrace.
BBQs are possible. Also, there is a small swimming pool to cool off if
you sit in the sun. However, we never did it and always visited either
Great Knip or Porto Mari beach.
The bungalows do not have GLASS windows. Only aerated adjustable wood
windows with insect nets on the inside.
Air conditioning is in each bedroom. Internet by LAN is free at the El
Sobrino. No other technology is available at the bugalows.
Kitchen has gas oven&plate, a coffee machine, iron and usual kitchen
ware. No microwave or electric water cooker yet. I hope it will be
available, since boiling water in the morning takes sometimes a bit
Cleaning & fresh towels is every 3 days. Towels and pool towels are provided and
changed. Bring your own soap&shampoo. Bathroom has walk in shower,
with instant hot water, that never gets very hot to allow a steam
If you want to enjoy a beautiful view over the Westpunt bay, ask for
bungalow no.9.
The location of the bungalows is away from the night
life of Curacao, thus not recommended for singles or teens.
But if you want to relax and disconnect from every day stress, this is
the perfect location.
One last note: mosquitos - do bring your own stuff against them,
preferably in enough quantities, since the few sprays, candles and creams we
found on the island proved to be more placebo than actually working.
Also consider wearing long sleeves/trousers in the evenings, if you
are usually a mosquito target.
We spent at Westhill a beautiful 9 day vacation and would very much return.
