My wife and I stayed here on October 12, 2012. We've travelled a lot in France and pay a lot of attention to finding places that are full of character and provide wonderful experiences. Our general goal is to average about 100-125 euro per night when we travel outside Paris.
The short story: Highly recommended! A warm and charming "domaine" in a beautiful rural setting with one of the nicest most interesting hostesses with whom we've had the pleasure to stay.
The longer version: Charming old stone building in a rural area off the left bank of the Gironde River, a few minutes north of St. Estephe, the northernmost "great growth" appellation. The setting is very pastoral, with horses in the fields around the domaine and chickens next door. There are some small villages nearby with restaurants.
We had booked a room, but were treated to a stay in the separate stone building, which is a HUGE, well-appointed apartment with a full kitchen. There was simply no noise at all other than a rooster crow in the morning.
Our hostess, Sophie, was wonderfully gracious and helpful. She speaks fluent English and can help with planning daytime activities, such as our visit with a charming older couple who own and run a small Bordeaux winery (Chateau Tour Castillon).
Firm, comfortable bed and large appealing bathroom.
Breakfast included homemade yogurt and jams, as well as pastries.
The main consideration to be aware of is the small amount of additional drive time required if you're going to make repeated visits to chateaux in the Medoc. The domaine is approximately 30-40 minutes north of Paullac (Ch. Lafite Rothschild and Ch. Mouton Rothschild).
If you're not familiar with this region of the Bordeaux wine country, be aware that there are limited tourist facilities and it's not uncommon to discover that a place that sounds impressive is, in fact, somewhat cold and in need of maintenance. In contrast, Domaine des Pres Joussac will not disappoint -- it's really a special find.
