An exceptionally pretty place in a picturesque location, Domaine des pres de Joussac just oozes calm and a sense of well being. Although a little small and dark our room was comfortable, clean, and being part of a beautiful old barn, full of character. A sitting dining room with a well equipped kitchen area is provided for the shared use of Chambres d'hôtes guests, so we were able to keep picnic food and wine cool in the fridge and everything was there to allow us to self-cater one night. The place is now known to us as 'Sophie's place' , thanks to the highly professional, kind and knowledgeable proprietor Sophie who was able to arrange a visit to a fascinating chateau at no extra cost, and recommended a thoroughly quirky local eatery where we enjoyed excellent local produce at a reasonable price. Breakfastshere are a treat - every day different home made breads, elderflower yogurt, a selection of homemade preserves, Creme brulee with tea and citron....I could go on and on but....oh and it's great for cycling too - not a hill in sight and lots of interesting things to see!!

Our party of two couples stayed here in April, and we couldn't have been more pleased with our choice. The weather had turned hot (30 degrees) and humid, but the old stone building in which our two beautifully furnished and spacious rooms were located was cool and comfortable, with the added surpise bonus of a self-contained living, dining and kitchen space connecting the two rooms.

Everything here is very high quality and beautifully done:- from the efficiency of the booking process to the warmth of the welcome, to the fixtures, fittings, bedlinen & towels. The beds are electric - you only have to lift a finger to rise gently to wakefulness. What luxury.

Breakfast was excellent - home-made bread and a choice of jams, again home-made, plus local yoghourt flavoured with lavender. The only very slight and minor negative was the lack of any savoury offering, and the absence of croissants.

Tip: We were fortunate to have the makings of an evening meal with us, and so took full advantage of the beautfully-equipped kitchen rather than driving the 30-minutes or so to the nearest recommended eatery. After a long drive that day, it was good to have the choice.

Mme Jouini is a delightful host, and I would recommend this lovely place wholeheartedly.

Room tip: Despite the roadside location, there is no noise at all in the rooms we stayed in - it's a very quiet road.

My wife and I stayed here on October 12, 2012. We've travelled a lot in France and pay a lot of attention to finding places that are full of character and provide wonderful experiences. Our general goal is to average about 100-125 euro per night when we travel outside Paris.

The short story: Highly recommended! A warm and charming "domaine" in a beautiful rural setting with one of the nicest most interesting hostesses with whom we've had the pleasure to stay.

The longer version: Charming old stone building in a rural area off the left bank of the Gironde River, a few minutes north of St. Estephe, the northernmost "great growth" appellation. The setting is very pastoral, with horses in the fields around the domaine and chickens next door. There are some small villages nearby with restaurants.

We had booked a room, but were treated to a stay in the separate stone building, which is a HUGE, well-appointed apartment with a full kitchen. There was simply no noise at all other than a rooster crow in the morning.

Our hostess, Sophie, was wonderfully gracious and helpful. She speaks fluent English and can help with planning daytime activities, such as our visit with a charming older couple who own and run a small Bordeaux winery (Chateau Tour Castillon).

Firm, comfortable bed and large appealing bathroom.

Breakfast included homemade yogurt and jams, as well as pastries.

The main consideration to be aware of is the small amount of additional drive time required if you're going to make repeated visits to chateaux in the Medoc. The domaine is approximately 30-40 minutes north of Paullac (Ch. Lafite Rothschild and Ch. Mouton Rothschild).

If you're not familiar with this region of the Bordeaux wine country, be aware that there are limited tourist facilities and it's not uncommon to discover that a place that sounds impressive is, in fact, somewhat cold and in need of maintenance. In contrast, Domaine des Pres Joussac will not disappoint -- it's really a special find.

Room tip: Attention si vous prenez le bac pour Royan, il y a parfois une forte affluence qui provoque un bouchon de plusieurs heures.
