Hosting is an art, the skill of which Pop has mastered. Originally built by Pop and his partner to host their family and friends, Mae Nai Gardens is a true home away from home. My friend and I spent 4 nights at Mae Nai Gardens and loved every minute of it. Pop made sure that we felt at home and treated us more like friends than customers, which added to the enjoyment of our stay.

Villa:
We stayed in one of the 5 villas, which has an en-suite bedroom, a spacious living room, and a terrace. The rooms are clean and cosy, with plenty of windows to look out into the beautiful greenery in the gardens. The windows are lined with mosquito nets, which is thoughtful given that the villa is surrounded by greens. Despite the heat wave during the time of our stay and the lack of AC, the fan kept us cool at night and there were nights where we didn't even need the fan on to sleep comfortably. The gardens are gorgeous, they go harmoniously with the design of the villas and the art pieces that had been carefully placed around the gardens, e.g. the grumpy man statute near the lake, the playful kid and cat on our roof and the smiley kid hidden in the bushes, just to name a few.

Service:
This is not a hotel (in the traditional meaning of the word), but Pop, our host, is friendly, sweet and hospitable. He arranged a driver for us throughout the trip, and helped us plan our days out with excellent recommendations.

Food:
Breakfast is quick and easy but delicious. We got a plate of fruit and eggs (any style) on whole wheat bread with orange juice and coffee every morning. Not the most exciting but does the trick for breakfast.

Overall:
Being away from the hustle and bustle of old town Chiang Mai, Mae Nai Gardens was exactly what we were looking for - it was stylish, minimalistic, and close to nature. We enjoyed the low density and non-establishment style of Mae Nai, which translated into having the pool to ourselves almost whenever we wanted to take a dip. We are very happy with our stay and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to see Chiang Mai without being in the heart of the action.

What a great review, Catherine. Sorry I wasn't there to meet you, but your words about Pop ring very true. He is a great host, and always goes the extra mile for guests. So pleased that you enjoyed your stay, despite the heatwave!

Me and my girlfriends stayed at the lotus villa for 3 nights by end of Feb. and we still miss it a lot. It's a wonderful place with lots of personal character and charm. We admired their collection of furniture and arts, beautiful garden, ponds, lovely salted pool...oh also the very friendly cats. Of course, the owner, Ian is being so helpful and kind. If you like countryside and wake up by sound of birds, or some music and announcements from the near by village then it is the place for you. It's not a fancy 5 star hotel but it's like staying at a friend's beautiful villas not being disturbed. I also look forward to visit Ian's property in Scotland some day.

Room tip: They are all good

Hosts excellent. Gardens and design excellent. Individual bungalows excellent, stayed in two. Each is different with its own charm. Pool is amazing. Free bikes if you like. Big fish in pond. Don't hesitate to ask for recommendations from owners. Their suggestions are excellent, and thoughtfully offered. I stayed several days longer than planned. Quiet secluded and relaxing.

We stayed here for five days and it was a delightful experience. The setting in a wonderful garden is perfect .The pool area is an ideal place to relax and enjoy the ambience. We loved the rooms .Clean and well appointed but also splendid artworks to add to the enjoyment.
The breakfast was good and served in a lovely space with views of the garden.
The location is ideal for visiting Chiang Mai and the attractions around .Taxis are cheap and easy to arrange .
There are lots of very good eating options locally .All tasty and good value.
We were so appreciative of the help given by the owners Ian and Pop .
They can adviise on all the options and nothing was too much trouble for them.
Definitely a place to revisit.

Loved the art that is scattered throughout the grounds. Appreciated the fresh breakfast served every morning. Ian and Pop were as helpful as can be arranging taxis when needed, and even providing rides around with them personally when possible. Great for a quiet getaway outside the city.
