After a morning tasting wine in the area, this was the break we needed. The owner took charge the moment we entered, expertly navigating us through some of the local delicacies. We were particularly grateful for his attentiveness to the special dietary needs of one of the members of our party who has gluten sensitivity. The starters were a fantastic introduction to some of the cheese and cold cuts of the area and complemented it with a glass of sparkling white wine. Conscious of being late for lunch (but never put under pressure to hurry), we followed the suggestions of the owner for the main course and were served home made pasta with combinations of ragu' of the day. We loved it, and allowed ourselves to be convinced into trying the recommended assortment of cakes: we had no regrets.
Highly recommended for quality of food and the friendliness of the owner.

I rarely leave the entire order to a waiter, but here I was in safe hands.Honestly we did not look at the menu regarding food and vine.Italian food is usually rustic and is based on a good selection of fine ingredients. If you work, you will usually become a satisfied guest. However, the prices felt as little in excess of this rural restaurant.

We went to Il Barrino for dinner with our four kids while we were visiting in Tuscany. Gianluca runs a very nice barrino that seems to be the center of everything in Monitisi. He runs the dining room while his wife Christina runs the kitchen. Gianluca says that as a barrino, they don't have a professional chef, but that Christina cooks with passion. I can say that the food was delicious, the wine was perfectly selected, and the hospitality was phenomenal. Gianluca made us feel like we were in his home, and we will definitely be going back next time we are in the region.

GianLuca leaned over and spoke in the most sincere voice, "Look, you can stay here comfortably as long as you need to and you don't even have to buy anything." We had just sat down in his bar and assured him our host would be along shortly. Often bars don't like you lingering at all if you aren't a "client" (as they put it in Italian). Understandably, yet Gianluca was as nice and sincere as they come. They took us as a last minute reservation upstairs in the restaurant that evening. The food was both authentic and inventive, and the service (essentially just Gianluca), was warm and welcoming. I was just so pleased.

At one point in our meal, a family from Sicily sat down on the table next to us. They called over Gianluca and brought something to his attention, he then picked up the phone and called someone. As it turns out, the 6 year old girl in the family had a horrible toothache, and Gianluca was friends with the local dentist (it being a small town and all). So at 9 at night a restaurant host was calling around to help this family with their emergency. You just don't find hosts like that anymore.

The next day was a holy festival and the whole town was eating at "Il Barrino." We came back on the tail end of things during clean up. We came in hoping they still had some sandwiches for the road (they didn't). Yet, when Gianluca overheard us asking, he almost ran to the kitchen to make something. It was 2 in the afternoon and everything closes in Italy for lunch, oddly even the grocery stores at times. He rushed back as we were leaving and gave us the sandwiches-- no charge. "Good luck with your travels." What a guy. This was one of the best surprises I've had in the four years of living/travelling in Italy. While the food was divine, it was the warm smile and unforgettable kindness of the host that will have me back in no time.

First of all...do not skip the bar! While it appears to be more of a convenience store; it is quite charming. The family that owns it is quite charming and unbelievably hospitable. At some point during Appertivo hour it seems as if the the entire town stops in for a drink. Everyone is quite friendly and you are certainly treated as a local . By the second day in Montisi, everyone seemed to know us and nod as if we have lived there for years.
The restaurant is really great. As previous reviews say-no menu. The owner talks to you for a few minutes and arranges with you something you will absolutely enjoy. Everything that I had there was fantastic. It is a really tiny town but worth the trip! Amazing food and wine, owned by a lovely family.
