What a fabulous experience. From the warm welcome at the wharf to the great food provide onboard to the informative crew , this is a must do trip.
Watching the crew supply and refurbish local salmon and fishing lodges as well as supporting solo kayakers is an interesting and fascinating experience.
Add to that the chance to visit Nootka sound with Friendly- and Resolution-bays as highlights (Captain Cook landed here 224 years ago)
On our trip we saw sea lions , bald eagles and whales so a wildlife tour too.
It’s amazing and will live long in our memories
Thank you so much

Wonderful and unique trip from Gold River to Kyuquot abord the MV Uchuck III.
Departing the Gold River wharf in the morning darkness as the crew loaded the last of the cargo, our journey began.
Wonderful crew of 5, with our captain, Spencer at the helm.
Cruising past islands and through magical inlets, wildlife abounds - humpback whales, orcas, bears, sea lions, sea otters and eagles.
Great food is available onboard to purchase and there is always hot coffee.
Stops at fish farms and logging camps offer a glimpse of coastal life.
We arrived in the special first nations outpost, Kyuquot, before dinner, which was served in the only lodge/restaurant - served family style - all at the same table.
Local staff are very friendly.
Kyuquot also offers a look back to first nations coastal life.
Such a magical trip that we would do it again, this time taking some friends.

Fabulous day onboard. Great crew and superb cook, the chilli was brilliant. Lucky to see a black bear cub and mother. Thoroughly recommend this trip on such a venerable old ship with such friendly passengers.

It is a fabulous way to experience some of Vancouver Island's west coast.

The scenery, abundant wildlife and weather were all remarkable on our trip.

It is also a great way to see first-hand the significant economic activity the area generates through the fish farms, logging operations, kayaking support, and sport fishing lodges.

To see the positive and cooperative interaction between First Nations and non First Nations at Kyuquot was inspiring.

Julie who looked after booking the trip was professional, personable and knowledgeable. The Uchuck III is a wonderful old boat full of history and colour. Captain Spencer and the rest if the Crew were all first-class.

World-class scenery throughout the trip. Always entertaining - birds, whales, porpoises, sea otters, getting to watch a working ship off-loading (and picking up) cargo in tiny outposts along the coast. We went on the two-day, over-night in Kyuquot, trip which was simply a wonderful outing. Now, the weather on both of our days (end of first week in September) was clear and sunny with a bit of a breeze on the first day which generated a bit of a swell when the ship was travelling briefly (<2hrs) along the outer shore, not protected by any islands. People with typically weak stomachs were all reportedly fine. The overnight accommodation was super-clean, friendly, (we had private washroom facilities), cozy, comfortable in Kyuquot and the meal was unbelievably good. Provisions arrive only a couple of times a week on the ship you just sailed on - hats off to the cook and the wait staff. Everything was plentiful and very tasty. The crew on the Uchuck were very accommodating and knowledgeable and would answer seemingly any question about the ship, the coast, the communities, the local history … safe operation of the ship permitting. A really fascinating, up-close view of the working coast. The ship has inside and outside seating, basic hot food offerings, roomy and clean washrooms. Office staff were clear, communications about cancellations and recommended Gold River accommodation and restaurants were helpful and insightful. Can’t recommend this highly enough. Not for people with significant mobility limitations, I would think.
