Would highly recommend this trip, we were amazed that all this was so close to Auckland. A very informative trip, well organised but you must book as it is very popular in the summer months.

I really enjoyed this .....it shows NZ unique forest...and the bonus is you get to see glow worms and you are able to get a different perspective of the Waitakere ranges. The staff were helpful and the train is really cute.

A very nice trip and a good way to discover the city environs! Also child really enjoy it! Trip is very exiting and the tiny train is an alternative to reach places that don't normally reach!

Great trip but please be aware it is out of action until the new year because of maintenance . From their website: The Rain Forest Express service is temporarily unavailable while repairs are carried out to the track following a land slip

We went on the twilight trip - train to the dam in daylight, walk up the steep 150 steps / up the gentle slope to the dam, then a barbecue stop (bring your own food!) before back on the train in the dark to see the glow worms. Amazing! The staff are really knowledgable, friendly and humorous. The tiny train is brilliant - windows on one side and the roof and open the the elements on the other side.
Totally recommended.

We went on an evening trip on the railway and it was very interesting. The lady train driver was very knowledgeable. There are a number of ways up to the dam but we chose to climb the steps. There is a long picnic break built into the tour which we were unaware of, so take a picnic or meat for the (gas) barbeque and take insect repellent.

On the way back it was getting dark and we were enchanted by the glow worms on the tunnel roofs.

Kids love trains and tunnels are the best part. This trip has long tunnels, bridges, scenic views, glowworms and wetas. The little train is a bit challenging for a large adult but you soon forget the discomfort enjoying the scenery of the beautiful Waitakere rain forest. The staff were great on our trip - train driver and tour guide, Roman and his assistant Elaine were both friendly and helpful and really added to the experience with a light hearted and informative commentary.
We will go back for the evening excursion which sound like even more fun.

No doubt that this is a very interesting train ride. Not your usual train..a very small train and cabin sits 2 with less that 20 ppl on board . But it goes through amazing tunnel and great bridges and at places caves are about 1 feet from the train windows.
Glow warms are intersting features where train is slowed down and you can watch the glow worms through glass roof...

Booking necessary atleast 2 days in advance . We were lucky to get it on same day as train was not full and a kind lady help us through same day booking.

Does not run every day its best to plan and look at their website for details on schedule and booking.

Have fun .
