“No double glazing and very noisy plumbing!!!!”
Reviewed 31 July 2011

We have just returned from spending two nights here and although it was very quaint I feel they should consider some form of double glazing because it was quite noisy from 5.30am and the plumbing noises also added to a very early wake up time. We ate in the restaurant the first evening and found the service very, very slow even though we were the second table to be seated. The waitress could not differentiate which of their speciality pies were which and my husband was given the pie ordered by his sister and his sister given his order - not the best start to a very long wait!!!

Me and my friends stayed the night before setting off on our Gold Duke of Edinburgh. the staff were very friendly and managed to do us a nice deal to keep our costs low as we were only staying the 1 night on a wednesday.
The staff were really friendly and didn't mind opening breakfast half an hour early so that we could be on our way :)

very pleasant stay.

We had an evening meal here and it was lovely! We booked a table which was just as well as the place was very busy. This led to a lovely atmosphere and when the food arrived we were not disappointed. The starter and the mains were both excellent home cooked food. The staff could not be more helpful, and were on the ball with all ordered even though they were very busy. We eat out a lot and could not recommend this place enough, a real hidden gem !!

I recently stayed at the Queens Head with several friends and had a wonderful time. The bar has a wonderful open fire and many wooden beams. We only stayed for one night as we were travelling on to Scotland but i plan to come back sonne. The staff welcomed us in and made sure that we had everything we needed for our stay. We all went for one of the many pies, that the large menu had to offer and none of us were disappointed. The only complaint i would have, was that i didn't have room for desert!

The rooms were good value and over looked fields to the front and had everything we needed, although the toliets were a little noisy. There was plenty of hot water though. I really enjoyed my stay and will hopefully return soon.

Booked the room through Laterooms the week prior to travelling and arranged to meet up with our mate who lives near Penrith. We arrived at about 18:30 and thought the outside and interior looked appealing/cosy. We were the only customers in the bar and when we spoke to the bar staff to book in they couldn't find our booking even with our confirmation e-mail from Laterooms. The staff contacted the owner by phone (she was upstairs) and it was confirmed there was no booking. Over the next 10 minutes the owner was contacted teice again as we said we were now without accommodation, she said no e-mail confirming the booking had been received from, Laterooms. The suggestion was to go to Pooley Bridge as one of the inns there had room. At no time did the owner show her face! We arrived at Pooley Bridge and booked in an old inn there. We rang Laterooms and they checked and said there was definitely a booking made with the Queens head and even quoted the time they sent the e-mail to the Queens Head! We made sure no charge was debited for the Queens Head and told Laterooms that it was not satisfactory. We had to contact our friend and he had to travel the extra distance to meet up. When we posted a similar review on the Laterooms website stating that obviously someone was not telling us the truth, either the Queens Head or Laterooms, the review was rejected, obviously anything other than a positive review is not deemed acceptable! We will never use Laterooms again due to this and we will not use the Queens Head due to such poor service, the owner should of come down and spoken to us in person given the circumstances.

I stayed one night, travelling with my sister. The staff could not have been more friendly and welcoming. We arrived in the middle of their beer and sausage festival - the pub was packed, but they kept an eye out for us and made sure we found a table and were served quickly. We had an excellent (sausage) meal - the menu included sausage stroganoff! The room was small but clean and nice, plumbing, as others have said, efficient but noisy. We discovered over the full English breakfast (more sausages) that the new owners had only been there 6 weeks. They had a huge event on their hands and everything seemed to be running extremely smoothly - the festival customers where clearly much enjoying themselves. The new owners know they have some physical upgrading to do, but the welcome was so warm and the food so good that the overall experience was great, despite less than luxurious mattresses and a toilet that sounded as if it was about to go into orbit.

We were looking for a place to stay on the way back from Scotland and it's a very short detour from M6 putting you a 10-minute drive away from Ullswater if you have some time for an hour's stroll before continuing down south. We got there just after the kitchen closed. Nevertheless when asked we got excellent cold meats, chips and salad and an imprompty dessert for afters. The pub is very old and the beer very good. The rooms are a bit cramped and the floor creaky, very atmospheric. I thought that there would be more traffic noise it being right on the road but actually it was very quiet except if you or the neighbours used the loo (got those macerator thingies). Large breakfast, handy petrol station just next door and we were on the road again.
