The terminal is nice new and clean, however offers very few options to the weary travelers. The only food services offered is through vending machines. It should be noted that any traveler should eat in town before entering terminal.
I recently travelled to Newfoundland via Marine Atlantic. We took the Blue Puttees from North Sydney on the way there and returned on the Atlantic Vision from Argentia. We had a two-bed birth on both crossings, which was quite comfortable. The beds had pillows and linens, there was a TV and shower, and the rooms were quiet and dark for sleeping, which was made easier as we were gently rocked to sleep by the waves. They serve Van Houtte coffee at the snack bar when you need a little pick-me-up in the mornings. On the way back, we went to the lounge to listen to some live music and play cards. There is bar there that also serves snacks. We went to the à-la-carte restaurant on the return crossing but I would not recommend it (on balance, for the price we paid, you're probably better off eating at the buffet, buying a pre-made sandwich at the snack bar, or bringing your own food). I will say the crew was lovely on both voyages and the loading and off-loading at the docks was organized and efficient on both occasions.
This was my first time ever on a Ferry, wasn't sure what to expect. I thought the ship was very nice, very clean, staff were very polite. Only reason I am giving a 4 star is due to cost of food and alcohol. Pretty expensive $11 for a shot (yes, one shot)for crown royal. If your having a drink make sure you check the liquor menu for prices, as they all vary.
My wife and I made a quick trip to Moncton form NL which consisted of a day crossing going over and a night crossing coming back.
I haven’t been on the ferry since these relatively new ones came around..i.e. Blue Puttees.
A lot of changes from when people would have to sleep on the floor
We had regular seats going over in the day but had reserved seating coming back at night for a cost of $20 each...very slight differences and can’t say I would spend $40 to upgrade again
Very friendly staff all the way around ,from entering ticket booth at both ports to leaving vessels at end of trips and everyone in between.
Beautiful sunrise coming into PAB during our trip
The food was basic but not extravagantly priced. The regular seating was comfortable for sitting purposes but definitely not conducive to a good night's sleep. The overall pricing of the ferry seemed a bit excessive yet I can somewhat understand as perhaps not that many people travel to Newfoundland regularly.
If you are going to take the ferry, do it in the morning.
If you do plan to travel by night, take a blanket and don't expect to get much sleep.
We took the ferry from N. Sydney Nova Scotia to Port aux Basque Newfoundland. Everything from loading vehicles to seating to scheduling was very well organized. Staff were friendly and helpful. They had 3 food venues with good food and reasonable prices. We had reserved seats that were comfortable and with good ocean views. We left and arrived right on time. The crossing takes 6 hours but you can wander around, eat, watch TV, surf on their computer terminals so the time went by quickly. Very nice way to travel to Newfoundland.
