This 93 mile, 9 hour ferry ride across the Hecate Strait takes you from Prince Rupert to Haida Gwaii. Although the crossing can sometimes be rough, don’t let this stop you from experiencing one of BC’s most amazing destinations. Just be sure to have Gravol with you just in case.
Boarding starts promptly 2 hours ahead of departure time. Be sure you have picture ID with you.
On this overnight cruise, we booked a cabin which consisted of 2 sets of bunk beds. There was a tiny bathroom with shower. This was most adequate. However, booking a cabin is not a requirement and it is quite acceptable to bring your own sleeping bag and stake out an area in the Raven Lounge or the kid’s play area (which has some nice cushioned benches) as your personal sleeping space. People do this all the time because they find the cabins too expensive and/or claustrophobic. The only problem I had with sleeping was that it was very noisy, probably engine noise, I’m not sure. You might want to bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.
The setup of the ship is not all that user friendly as there is no deck at the front and with only a few small windows, you don’t get a good view of what’s ahead. This really does compromise the “cruise ship” feel.
If possible, take this trip between July 15 and August 15 when weather is optimal. Otherwise, be prepared for cloudy, windy, rainy weather and cool temps in the range of 12-16 C in the summer. Reservations recommended.
