This 93 mile, 9 hour ferry ride across the Hecate Strait takes you from Prince Rupert to Haida Gwaii. Although the crossing can sometimes be rough, don’t let this stop you from experiencing one of BC’s most amazing destinations. Just be sure to have Gravol with you just in case.

Boarding starts promptly 2 hours ahead of departure time. Be sure you have picture ID with you.

On this overnight cruise, we booked a cabin which consisted of 2 sets of bunk beds. There was a tiny bathroom with shower. This was most adequate. However, booking a cabin is not a requirement and it is quite acceptable to bring your own sleeping bag and stake out an area in the Raven Lounge or the kid’s play area (which has some nice cushioned benches) as your personal sleeping space. People do this all the time because they find the cabins too expensive and/or claustrophobic. The only problem I had with sleeping was that it was very noisy, probably engine noise, I’m not sure. You might want to bring ear plugs if you are a light sleeper.

The setup of the ship is not all that user friendly as there is no deck at the front and with only a few small windows, you don’t get a good view of what’s ahead. This really does compromise the “cruise ship” feel.

If possible, take this trip between July 15 and August 15 when weather is optimal. Otherwise, be prepared for cloudy, windy, rainy weather and cool temps in the range of 12-16 C in the summer. Reservations recommended.

Dear Viagirl,

Thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review of our service in the north.

As you mentioned, cabins are an option for sleeping arrangements and a way to have your own washroom for the duration of the trip, which can be preferable for some. You provided some great tips for people, including bringing earplugs to quiet down the noise from the engine at night. You are certainly correct that the best weather is during July and August for optimal viewing of the scenery!

We look forward to welcoming you onboard again in the future!

Kind regards,
Amanda - Customer Care

We really enjoyed to take the BC ferry from and to Vancouver from Victoria. Easy booking, short waiting time and nice on-board amenities. The journey lead us nearby islands and Canadian scenery. Included the mandatory horn-blow, which blew my ears.....by the way. Very professional!

An essential service that's trying to be a cruise ship and gift shop. Over bloated management has cause prices to jump 300% over the last 6 years.

If you are travelling with a pet, be prepared to have the most uncomfortable experience.
You are not allowed to be on the passenger deck so they put you in this little tiny room downstairs on the vehicle deck. The room smelled so disgusting I couldn't even breath!
You don't have a view of anything except the vehicles downstairs and
The wifi didn't connect.
We are paying the same amount of money as everybody else but have to travel in way more discomfort and can't use any of the activities upstairs!
BC Ferries should really think of making it more comfortable and nicer for those travelling with pets especially for the price that we are paying.

I took the ferry to Pender Island and found it very efficient. The ferry left on time at both ends of the two islands.
It was a very comfortable ride. One could look out and see the gulf islands in the distance.
The staff were friendly.
