Francis was a gracious host, our rooms were lovely and the building is very cool. If we are ever back on Vancouver Island, we would definitely stay here again. Everything was clean and neat. Some older reviews indicate there have been some issues in the past, but the new owner, and Francis the manager, are definitely working hard to address those issues, and from everything we can tell, they've been successful.

We stayed at this Inn for two nights recently. The location is interesting, tucked away and the inn looks charming from the outside but is in serious need of a cleaning and someone running the operation who knows what they are doing. It could really be something nice, but is not. Cleanliness, amenities, food and service were all serious issues for us. I tried to contact the manager afterwards to give them some direct feedback, but whomever answers their emails refused to give me either the managers name or contact information! Who ever heard of such a thing? I believe that the owner of this establishment needs to get more involved. We'd certainly not return.

I stayed for one night in the Lady Byng suite on my way home to the Lower Mainland. I had a delicious meal in the dining room, and enjoyed a warm conversation with the owner who just celebrated one year of management. She is working hard to maintain the history and life of this wonderful gem, a real difference-maker in a sea of generic hotel chains these days. It's not perfect - they could use more staff and it's obvious that outdoor areas need renovation, but the rooms are clean, tidy and comfortable. The architecture takes centre stage here, and I hope the new owners continue uncovering the story and spirit of this property. It would make a fantastic, intimate wedding venue! I look forward to seeing the Inn maintain its historical charm balanced with the needs of the modern traveler. A really nice change of pace.

My girlfriend and I had planned a girls weekend away and looking so forward to staying at the Inn. But we were very disappointed when walking into our room, which was one queen and a pull out. The whole room could have been charming but it was very dated. Not Vintage or Antique dated...Old tired early eighties dated. But we gave it a chance and went out to enjoy the sights of Sidney. When we returned in the evening. We looked around for the linen for the pull out. There were none. So we thought the bed could be made up already. So we pulled it out and found the original "80's" dirty mattress. Covered in dog fur and dog food! Yuk...
We actually had a good night sleep on the comfy Q bed. But then in the morning noticed the sign that the bathtub was out of order. But wait..there was no hot water in the shower as well !
We went down to get our complementary breakfast and was served by a nice young man . We could tell he was not trained or very comfortable with his job. After the other costumer left the dinning room we told our waiter (who welcomed us at the front desk when we arrived as well) the problems we had with our room. He apologizes profusely and disclosed that a gentlemen and his dog had stayed in our suite for 2 weeks and did not want daily house cleaning. He said the room was very dirty when he left and they thought they had cleaned everything in the room. But didn't give us an explanation for the lack of hot water. He said he would be happy to reimburse me for our second night.
When we were checking out I asked the young man if his parents owned the place. He said no, the owners were away and he is a first year in a business degree , foreign exchange student from China and was hired for the summer to do the Inns books. But obviously he was given the job of hotel manager, waiter, chamber maid and maybe even cook...

If you are tired of the usual motel décor and standardized experience, switch to B&Bs. This grand old summer home is a bit hemmed in by an upscale residential building on one side, but the sea side, which includes a yacht basin, provides lovely views, and it was generally quiet. The room was fabulous (wood paneling throughout, with the panels painted in a folk art mural of woodlands) - four-posted bed, very comfortable, firm mattress, lovely clean bathroom and shower. Timing prevented investigation of the Inn's food service - we had to catch an early flight from Victoria International (a short cab drive away). The mood at the Latch Inn fits perfectly with the old-fashioned loveliness and pace of Vancouver Island.
