Lovely place to stay in Parksville

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 15, 2020
We stayed two nights at the Bayside. Our view was perfect - overlooking the ocean and nearby islands - but the shore at the hotel is rocky so you do have to walk a bit to get to a sandy beach. We enjoyed a delicious dinner at the restaurant as well as breakfast. Their policy, though, of requiring food to be ordered at all times meant that instead of being able to sit and enjoy a drink on the patio at 3, the place was empty. The patio was large, but some of the plantings need to be trimmed down to allow for a view while seated. Our room was very clean, with comfortable chairs and bed. My biggest complaint was only one staff member at the desk during both check-in and check-out times, which meant more people standing around in the lobby than necessary, as well as having to ask desk staff for room supplies.

This hotel looks like a relic from the 70’s. The electric vehicle charging station was an extension cord hanging down from a covered walkway. The parking lot was a big gravel lot.

With a hard 4:00 check in time, we expected a line up, and we were not disappointed. Decided to have an early dinner to let the line up diminish. The restaurant was nice, except for the fruit fries covering the window. Food was good but pricey.

Finally made it to the room. Opened the door and the first thing that hit us was the smell. Rather disgusting. Opened the patio door to air our the room, but then realized there was no screen, so who knows what else came in.

The room was very dark and cramped feeling. The bed was hard, and every time one of us moved, the bed moved with us, made it very difficult to sleep. Listened to the people above walking around and listened to the noise fr: the restaurant below.

I was happy to see a bathtub, but quickly realized it was too small to bathe in. The shower pressure was pathetic.

Also, this “resort” is not o; the sandy beach that says Parksville, it’s on a rocky, muddy approach to the beach.

We will never stay there again. It is not a resort, more a glorified motel. This is the third place we have stayed at in the past two months, by far the most expensive and the worst experience.

Room tip: Stay away from the restaurant patio

Great vibe - the decor is "beach-y elegant" so despite the standard layout, the smart colour palette and hardware elevates the feel. We brought a small pet ($20 a night) and were given a pet-friendly room, with special balcony railings that our 3-pound pet would not accidentally fall through - a plus. Hardwood floors so our pet happily skidded everywhere. Functional fridge (no freezer) and our room also had no microwave. Parksville has very limited dining options so we ended up eating "downstairs" - reservations a must during COVID. You would also be required to wear a mask just to enter the building - a good policy. Definitely worth paying 20% more to get a room with ocean views.

Room tip: ocean view is the way to go, the "other side" is zero view ... the "town view" isn't nice.

First off we want to thank both management and staff for their very conscientious effort of taking precautions to minimize possible exposure to COVID 19.
Our room on the front had a super comfortable king size bed with lots of pillows. The hotel is set well back from the road and was very quiet. The room was spotless and roomy and the coffee maker was a Nespresso model and the selection of coffees were perfect. Quite a change from the insipid coffee that usually comes in a room most everywhere else!
The restaurant offered up a very good supper and their breakfasts were very good as well. Prices in the restaurant were reasonable.
Unfortunately due to COVID the pool and gym were closed but the beach which stretches for at least 1 km. was only a 4 minute walk away out back of the hotel. Our dog loved that!

The only recommendation we would give to management is to put a small inexpensive microwave oven in the room.

Our stay at the hotel started really well: I took out the luggage from the car and the receptionist came out to start the check-in more quickly. He was also a very nice, friendly, helpful guy --- I cannot remember his name, but he said he was from England. Really the kind of guy that makes you feel welcome.

The hotel itself was fine: maybe not spectacular, but the fact that they accept pets was a huge thing for us.

Another big plus was the restaurant: all the food we had was really great (I am not a gourmet though) and the service was impeccable too. They accommodated our dog there too, we had to stay on the lower patio but that was so much better in comparison to Vancouver where you cannot have your dog with you when dining, not even on a patio.

All the staff (reception, housekeeping & restaurant) are wonderful & accommodating! One of the best features is that it's a dog friendly establishment. Very clean & comfortable room. Easy beach access & great location. Can't wait to go back!!
P.S. Well set up for social distancing and COVID-19 restrictions.
