Searching for a girls getaway kayaking weekend trip we were fortunate enough to find “Adventuress” and the “Fabulous Friends Weekend”! Every detail of this amazing weekend far exceeded our expectations! Jan made arrangements for us to stay at the wonderful “Fiddicks Farm B&B” with a stunning ocean view and minutes from the kayak launch location. The proprietors, Jim and Anne and their family were incredibly warm and welcoming and went out of their way to make sure we were very well taken care of. The B&B’s amenities include a lap pool, Jacuzzi, self-contained living space, mini-kitchen, and very comfortable bedrooms with an incredible view. It is very apparent that Jim and Anne take great pride in their B&B and in making sure that their guests have a wonderful vacation. They made us a delicious breakfast on our first morning – everything was homemade and it got us ready for what was to be a spectacular day of kayaking.

Jan met us at the B&B on Saturday morning and took us down to the beach 5 minutes away where she gave us some on land instruction and safety training before we headed out for a picture perfect day of kayaking. The kayaking equipment was first rate – it was new, high end gear that included Betsea lifejackets designed for women. We had some novice kayakers and one more seasoned kayaker and Jan made sure to cater to each of our abilities. The weather couldn’t have been better – it was a beautiful sunny and calm day and the water was like glass. Jan took us on an incredible tour around De Courcy Island with a lunch stop at Pirate’s Cove. She is very knowledgeable about the marine biology, geography and history in the area and shared many very interesting pieces of trivia on our travels. We were fortunate to see an abundance of wildlife – eagles, seals, sea otters, starfish, and even dolphins! We arrived back to our launch site in the late afternoon invigorated and refreshing tired after being escorted back to the shore by a group of very friendly seals. After unloading our gear we headed back to the B&B for some time in the jacuzzi and then we were treated to an amazing dinner that Jan prepared for us at the B&B. Not only is Jan an incredibly talented kayak guide she is also one great chef! Our amazing day on the water was topped off with an evening of wonderful food and wine and very inspiring conversation.

On day two of our kayaking trip Jan took us paddling off the coast near the ferry terminal. The water was more open in this area and a bit rougher than Saturday but we were again very fortunate to have a spectacular sunny day. We explored an area with a bunch of small islands and had lunch on a tiny island with a sandy beach that was filled with colourful sea glass. Although the outskirts of Nanaimo were within sight on this little piece of paradise we felt like we were a million miles from the hustle and bustle of the city. After another wonderful day on the water Jan took us back to our launch site near the ferry and after unloading our gear we made our way to the ferry terminal 5 minutes away. We would highly recommend Adventuress, Fiddicks Farm B&B and the Fabulous Friends Weekend! Jan has many other tours to choose from and we can’t wait for our next amazing Adventuress getaway!!

Jan is an excellent instructor. I did ocean training on wet exits and self-rescues (which I never thought I'd be able to do!) Never would have imagined I would squish into a wetsuit and dump myself into the ocean in April, but with Jan's encouragement I did it successfully with a HUGE smile on my face. What a great experience, and Jan's calm, confident and easy to follow teaching method allowed me to experience more training in a session that I ever could have imagined. Initially, I was just eager to try out my new kayak, tour, and learn some paddle strokes. With Jan's gentle prodding to first try falling out of the boat close to shore and on the next day the full wet exit, I accomplished the skills I needed to have to paddle this summer with groups on longer trips. Jan's email convinced me, "It is very important as you know, for safety and self confidence to be able to do the rescues without hesitation and practice in waves cause when you go over, it isn't because it is a calm day!". We did it, Jan, THANK YOU!.

We just completed Jan’s “Seamanship and Trip Planning” course and it was simply excellent! Although we have been sea kayaking for a number of years, we had never had any formal instruction with regards to weather, navigation, chart reading, and trip planning – and we needed it. Jan knows her stuff – big time! She can explain the math behind the calculations involved in figuring out tides and currents, the “Rule of Twelfths”, and keep you smiling…all at the same time. The resources Jan provided will continue to provide important information and guidance as we increase our seamanship skills. There’s no question that each and every one of us who attended her carefully prepared sessions will be safer paddlers, and better equipped to support others we may be with on the water. HIGHLY recommended to all who love this self-propelled activity. Thank you, Jan! Duncan and Joan.

We found Adventuress through a pamphlet at a Vancouver Island B&B and contacted Jan by email. Her replies were prompt and friendly. Rates were great and directions to the put in place were clear. We were staying in Qualicum Beach and a shoirt drive (<30 min) towards Parksville. We did a half day paddle around an island. Mostly a very sheltered route and there was lots of opportunity for taking pictures. We followed the advice given regarding clothing and about bring our own lunch. Jan supplied us with good equipment - life vests, paddles, skirts and gave us clear safety instructions. She was a friendly guide for our tour and proivded us with lovely hot tea at lunch time. We were first out for the 2012 season and got brilliant sunny weather. We saw sea lions, seals, birds, and deer. This was an excellent outdoor adventure for us: two women, 50s, moderately fit with limited paddling experience.

This is something i have dreamed about doing for years, and when the opportunity came up, we were blown away by how special the whole trip was. Jan and her colleague looked after us so well with their competence and ease of manner, and we felt very safe. Their knowledge and attention to detail was phenomenal and it was such an enjoyable trip all round. The scenery wasn't too shabby either!! We lucked out with weather and whales too.
I would definitely recommend Adventuress Sea Kayaking and hope to take another trip with them one day.
