To find a museum of this caliber in a city as mid-size as Cranbrook is truly astonishing. It is well worth your time to devote a few hours to this place. It is free (by donation) to visit most of the museum's displays (which is VERY rare), and the gift shop is very nice. Be sure to see the Princess Alexandra Hall and read about its history. How remarkable that this room from Winnipeg was saved and moved to Cranbrook! And it is well worth it to pay to have a guided tour of the museum's collection of old passenger train carriages. This is the only museum in Canada to feature restored luxury (sleeper) train carriages -- and others in various states of restoration. So come see how "the other half" lived and traveled at the beginning of the 20th Century!

Lots of history compressed into a small space. I particularly like the model railroad displays. Also, the area of the Gift Shop has an exhibit of how they restored the interiors of the railroad cars they have on display. The museum is free / donation basis. You pay for tours of the railroad cars.

We were really impressed with the early Nineties rail cars. It has a history and how the cars were made wooden then steel and luxury cars. In the early century of 1900 one train was going from Vancouver to Montreal and one from Montreal to Vancouver. It is really a great place to visit to experience the history.

Took the Grand Tour that took about 1.5 hours. Our tour guide was knowledgeable, informative and very animated. (Ken)

It was an amazing trip down history lane with fantastic artifacts. The museum is doing a great job restoring and preserving these trains for everyone to enjoy. Our tour guide made the visit memorable.
