We have visted a number of times and always enjoyed the experience. Many times just the Royal Alexandra Hall (a real heritage piece) and we like to let our out of town friends know about the Museum so they can enjoy the train heritage as well. There is also an amazing quilt that depicts our local history that was created by a local group of quilters.

There is one major attractions at the Cranbrook Museum of Rail Travel. Most importantly, they have a large number of well-preserved card from various Canadian Pacific luxury trains from around 1900 through 1950. You are given a guided tour of the train cars and get to see what rail travel was like in past years, especially for people of means. The variety is fascinating, and the guide was able to add lots of background information and answer most questions. For anyone interested in rail travel, this museum is fantastic!

To find a museum of this caliber in a city as mid-size as Cranbrook is truly astonishing. It is well worth your time to devote a few hours to this place. It is free (by donation) to visit most of the museum's displays (which is VERY rare), and the gift shop is very nice. Be sure to see the Princess Alexandra Hall and read about its history. How remarkable that this room from Winnipeg was saved and moved to Cranbrook! And it is well worth it to pay to have a guided tour of the museum's collection of old passenger train carriages. This is the only museum in Canada to feature restored luxury (sleeper) train carriages -- and others in various states of restoration. So come see how "the other half" lived and traveled at the beginning of the 20th Century!

Lots of history compressed into a small space. I particularly like the model railroad displays. Also, the area of the Gift Shop has an exhibit of how they restored the interiors of the railroad cars they have on display. The museum is free / donation basis. You pay for tours of the railroad cars.
