we spent summer vacation (one month) at the river height motel and enjoyed very much
to stay at this motel because all staffs are very friendly, cozy, convenient for everything
such as river side walking, shopping etc. therefore we highly recommend this motel for
some one who want to spend your summer vacation without spending big money.

Room Tip: ask with motel manager mrs jessica who gives you best room for your need.

It is everything you would expect out of a very cheap motel.
Most people staying there are workers so be prepared to be woken up at 5:00AM....
When we first arrived our window wouldn't lock...there was a stick in the window to keep it locked.
The stick was too short, so we waited while he quickly "sawed" us another.
Very friendly people who run the place and the location was good.
All in all, very run down rooms, loud - you could hear your neighbour shower and walking around.

I gave it a better review then I think it deserves, only because of the price.

Room Tip: They are all the same..

We came to Courtenay for a family gathering. We booked a fortnight in advance and weren't asked if we wanted non or smoking rooms. Because of this, we got stuck with a smoking room. We got $30 off the room. The room reeked of stale smoke. Interesting because the door had a No Smoking sign on it. The property was clean & pretty with flowers but the age of the motel is obvious.

The room was relatively clean. We were in #11. This was 1 of the 3 rooms facing the highway. It was hot and couldn't leave these windows open at night due to the noise. There was a little kitchen with a bar sized fridge, sink, dishes and microwave. The double-bed bedroom had an ensuite. The shower had a decent pressure. Bathroom was barely stocked so if you are staying a few days, I'd suggest bringing your own products.

My mother-in-law stayed with her sister in a 2-bedroom suite. This was a non-smoking room that faced the parking lot. The kitchen was bigger than ours with a stove. The livingroom was the 1st bedroom. So if you want to have guests come in, they'll have to sit on the bed. I didn't see the 2nd bedroom but the bed was reportedly too soft.

Pros: staff are friendly, free wifi, TV with some cable channels, microwave+dishes, coffee+coffee maker, within walking distance of fast food & a gas station, parking lot

Cons: No pool, no hair dryer, A/C is not available in all rooms, extra blankets and pillows were not available in the rooms

Conclusion: the room served the purpose but I likely would not stay here again. We were displeased that we were not asked about smoking vs. non; and thus were stuck with a smoking room. If they had given us a choice when booking, I would have given them an extra star.

Room Tip: 1. At booking, ask about non-and-smoking rooms, A/C and availability of extra pillows/blankets 2...

We had checked in and were smoking outside some distance from the room and apparently according to the female at the desk we were smoking inside the room. You could tell right away that they were only interested in not returning my 50 dollar deposit and were looking for any flimsy reason they could find to not return it. My wife and myself argued with her for some time and only when I threatened to phone the RCMP did she reluctantly return my money. We will never stay here again after being treated like that !

My spouse selected this property primarily for its proximity to Strathcona Provincial Park where we hiked, its Trip Advisor reviews, and lower cost relative to some competing hotels nearby. Canadian prices for many things are generally higher than many US regions for many things even allowing for the Canadian dollar being worth ca. 7-8% less than the American (mid-August 2014), bit this motel was inexpensive by US or Canada standards.

An additional reason for the selection over another similar local hotel was this place had air conditioning at a slightly price, while the other did not. Un-usual only because I had not seen it before, the air conditioning was a standalone unit (portable?) that was ducted to the outside. It worked fine; turns out we only needed to run it on our days there for short times in the evening when the room seems a little warm. There was desk fan that we used more; a minor problem was that the fan's oscillating feature was not working.

The location is an older property with (2) two-level buildings, typical motel style. Access to the rooms is via outside walkways. There is a small office in one of the building, and the parking lot is relatively small. Hotel is located on the main street of Courtenay, and we noticed traffic noise only in the morning. When we got back late one afternoon the streets were relatively crowded with people (tourist type) and traffic, but after ca. 6 - 7 PM the street are almost completely empty of people (where did everyone go?) and there's little traffic volume. Did notice some occasional noises from adjacent rooms, especially one room where several people took some very long showers.

We had a spacious room, clean, odorless, non-smoking, with hardwood floors (better than carpet in our view), one queen beds and a bathroom with the toilet, tub/shower, and sink. The room looked recently renovated, nicely done. Lots of light from window on side opposite the entrance. Bathroom are had good size window that could be opened for fresh air and ventilation. There was the usual large flat-screen TV (did not use), and a small alcove with a table and two chairs, microwave (did not use, though always nice to have), small refrigerator (definitely used for beer/wine/soda/water/food), and coffee maker (did use). Although the main part of the room had adequate lighting, the alcove area did not, so while it was OK during the day with light from the nearby window; it was a dark area at night.

The bathroom sink was just that, not a vanity. On the plus side the sink did have the nice paddle-type handles and a tall spigot that make it convenient to fill our water bottles and hiking hydration packs. Bathroom had no counter space except on top of the toilet reservoir tank. Hand soap at the sink was a liquid soap bottle. A minor complaint might be the very small supplied bath soap bar that can be a bit more trouble to handle, but we always carry our own bars along anyway just in case...

Motel does not provide breakfast, but we got breakfast and lunch supplies from the local full-size Thrifty supermarket located on a back street off the main drag.

The free WiFi worked easily with our iPad with a consistent connection and speed. Did not use our AT&T cell phones in the room, but the local GSM carrier is Rodgers that showed as our phone signal. Call costs for us was $1/min for the few short calls we made while in Canada.

Based on our stay, I'd highly recommend this hotel in Courtenay.

We booked this hotel based on some of these reviews, but never again. I will admit it was clean, however way too expensive. We had a 2 room suite. Windows had no screens, and the weather was really hot. I turned the air conditioner on and when I got back the manager came out to say we must have forgot to shut the air off so she went in our room and did it. I was very upset as I was paying $138 a night for this. It took a long time to cool that room back down. The room gave both myself and husband migraines for all 3 days. Once we left so did the headaches. I will not go back!!
