Fernie Slopeside Lodge
Ranked #15 of 22 Hotels in Fernie
Reviewed 6 January 2017

The Slopeside Lodge is the value lodging option at the Fernie Alpine Ski Resort. Great location in the alpine village on the hill, close to the hillside bars, shops and restaurants.

Since it's focus seems to be on value, the rooms and amenities are very basic. Double rooms with two beds, and a standard bathroom, which work well for a couple of guys on a ski weekend (like us). Less so if you are bringing your wife with you, as she would likely not be impressed.

Lots of available parking (free) right outside the hotel. Two hot tubs in the hotel, but only one had the jets working when we were there. No restaurant in the Lodge, but there are several on the hill nearby. And yes, you can ski right up to the door of the Slopeside Lodge at the end of the day; though you need to walk a hundred yards at the start of the day.

Overall a good value lodging for the people with basic tastes, and are focused on the great skiing at Fernie Alpine Resort.

Room Tip: Book with Expedia or other site, as it was cheaper (per night pricing) than prices on the Fernie Alp...

Yes it's a bit older and not as well kept as the condos and homes around the hill but for a busy family with a dog it does the trick. Other pet friendly accommodations in the area are significantly higher priced over the Christmas rush. Front desk staff is very friendly and helpful. Just wish the beds were firmer.

We found a Groupon for 3 nights for $189 for Labour Day weekend. When we arrived, the room was clean and what we expected but the garbages had not been emptied. Our room did come with a fridge and microwave which was very useful.

It was handy having the little shop to get some groceries (price of milk was cheaper here than in town!). Staff were all very friendly and helpful.

A no-frills hotel - you get what you paid for. Free wifi was okay speed.

Room Tip: Make sure to let the staff know what time you will be checking in.

Where do i start...We walked into our room and immediately noticed a stench. I can only describe it as stale air mixed with floors cleaned with dirty mop water. I went out and bought a bottle of febreeze - that didnt touch the smell! There is NO air conditioning. The bathtub looked as if it hadn't ever seen a clean. The tub didn't drain properly, as you shower expect the water to pool around your ankles. The bedding did not look like it had been changed as I found multiple stray hairs in the sheets. Needless to say i didnt use any bedding. Outlets didn't work and lights flickered. I was scheduled to stay 2 nights however checked out after the first night. Unfortunately, the staff didn't seem overly concerned about my experience.

Room & beds looked clean, smelled clean & were very firm. No AC but a nice clean fan & we were blessed with cool evenings (other reviewers not so lucky) Updated paint & carpets too. As stated by reviewer Bridget earlier (we must have had the same room) 1 plug-in didn't work, the lights flicker/sizzle before coming on & are creaks throughout the room BUT 1) it's an old bldg 2) it's $65/night (summer rate) so you CAN'T expect perfection. And then in the winter they are right at the base so you pay extra for that convenience not for the room.

Dear Laurie G,
Thank you for your review. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us! I will look into the issues stated with our Maintenance team.

It is true that Fernie Slopeside Lodge is the most affordable, on-mountain accommodation, located right at the base of the mountain. It gives quick and easy access to the chairlift, summer and winter.

Spent one night on route to Vancouver. Room was clean, hotel quiet & was generally a comfortable place to stay. Had to check in at the neighbouring lodge as the time is off season but that was no problem. Hot tub is indoors, clean & pretty good. Would definitely stay here again.

We just completed a 3 day stay at the Fernie Slopeside Lodge as a short Getaway. We chose this lodge both because of location and cost. We were not disappointed with the location. The scenery is beautiful and relaxing, the location is outside of the town but close enough for easy access to stores and restaurants.

The resort where the lodge is located also has a small store, along with a Kelsey's restaurant. For whatever reason the Kelsey's is closed after 5pm on Sunday through Wednesday when we were there, therefor e we were unable to have supper there. We also found it odd how many restaurants in Fernie itself were closed for supper.

We found the staff to be helpful and friendly. The room itself was comfortable and we slept well. Only two problems with the room. (1) There is no air conditioning but you can open the window and there is a screen and we found that worked well. (2) The walls are thin. Not a problem usually though for a could of nights we had neighbours upstairs doing something after 11pm for a while that was noisy.

Two lift tickets come with the room and we went up just to enjoy the ride and the view - it was worth it.

The day we arrived was a hot day and the woman at check-in told us that because of that, she gave us a room on the bottom level which was cooler. we were given a room on the bottom floor - That was a good call - it was definitely cooler and was comfortable. The bottom floor also has a walk-out entrance at the same level to the back where there is additional parking.

All in all, we were happy with what we got, and will consider returning in the future.

Room Tip: In summer get a room on the bottom floor. It is cooler, the hot-tub is on the bottom floor along wit...

Dear Tj678,
Thank you for taking the time to post your review. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us, as well as the lift vouchers you received as part of a special offer. The scenery one can enjoy on a beautiful clear-sky day is indeed totally worth it!

It will be a pleasure to welcome you back on your next visit. Perhaps this winter to enjoy the great skiing/snowboarding Fernie has to offer.
