Good old-fashioned French food

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed May 20, 2016via mobile
We had come to the area to visit a Brocante market and, being a French long weekend, we found it hard to get a Sunday lunch reservation.

Lion d'Or was not really very close to the market, but we decided that the 30 minute drive was necessary just to get a meal.

We are pleased that we took the chance, as the food was very good... this is food quality and style that it is increasingly hard to find in France these days.

When we first started coming to France about 35 years ago there were about 200,000 bistro/brasseries ... now there are only about 30,000, so many of them closing down because of the high staff costs and the bureaucratic overheads that can cripple a small business. Treasures like this can still be found in some small villages, but they are not easy to find anymore.

The service was a bit hit and miss as they were very busy, but the food made up for it.
My duo of fois gras starter and ris de veau main were excellent, as was my wife's pintade.
The wine list was varied enough to suit most tastes and budgets.

This is an old fashioned, formal decor/environment but worth a visit for any travellers who are visiting the area.

En route from Brittany to Bilbao, we drove more than an hour out of our way to hopefully get the true French experience. We were successful! This hotel is not about a great room, it is about the total visit - the ride through the Bordeaux wine region, followed by a climb into the hills of the Dordogne set the tone. Arriving in the small town of Manzac Sur Vern, we parked in front of the ubiquitous WW I memorial, and checked into the old hotel. Our room was not large, but clean , with a decent bathroom. We reserved a table in the hotel's restaurant and relaxed for a few hours. Dinner was great - we were served by the sister of the owner/chef, and had a classic meal, with a very good local Bergerac red wine. This hotel is on a "Foie gras route", and deservedly so. If you love old France, it is worth the trip!

    Room tip: Eat there!

Stopped one night on a cycle tour. Clean, comfortable room. No frills but slept very well. Restaurant on first impression seemed rather formal and old fashioned but the food was of excellent quality and beautifully presented and the staff were friendly and attentive. The open air cinema gave the sleepy village a strange cartoon soundtrack but both cinema and church bells went silent at bedtime!
