We hope to welcome you back to Horseshoe Bay in the near future and we thank you so much for taking the time to post a review on Trip Advisor.
I work in the Horseshoe Bay area and, on occassion, find the need to stay overnight due to my work requirements. Each and every time I book into the Horseshoe Bay Motel and each and every time my stay is fantastic! The staff is friendly and helpful...even on those nights when I need a late check in....the rooms, which have all been updated....are clean, comfy and have all the ammenities I need. Most rooms have fridges and microwaves and if I wish one with a bathtub they are always able to ensure I get one. I see from other comments that the drive to the ferry is a bit of an issue but in all fairness that is no fault of the motel? If you ever miss a ferry or need an early start....do NOT hesitate to come to this motel....just simply time your departure knowing the route to the ferry takes a few extra minutes. The Horseshoe Bay Motel is part of a thriving eclectic community and one business that knows how to provide the best in customer service!
Based off the good review on here, I booked this hotel on a Saturday night in preparation for a Sunday morning ferry departure.
It was stated on here, but there is NO AIR CONDITIONING. And I figured by early September this would not be an issue. But it was a humid, high 70 degree day, and it was miserable inside for us Alaskans.
This was also slightly outside of the control of the motel and staff, but there happened to be a wedding party staying at there that evening that was very noisy and intoxicated. We went to bed about 9:30, and were rudely awakened by noisy cars, yelling and laughing at 12am-2am. We were torn between closing the windows and slightly reducing the noise, and having the windows open and enjoying the slightly cooler night air. As a fluke, a skunk or similar poor odor wafted in the bathroom window forcing us to close that one too.
Also, like others have said, there is not direct access for vehicles to the ferry, so you do have to go out, get back on the highway back toward Vancouver to Exit 4, then come back and follow the signs to the ferry ramp.
We requested compensation (a reduced rate reimbursement or something similar) from the hotel staff on account of the miserable sleep (about 4 muggy hours) and were ignored.
The upside is that Horseshoe Bay is a cute little community with some lovely restaurants (Dinner at Trolls was slow but excellent tasting) and the local ice cream shop had black licorice flavor!! (it's tough to find).
Next time if we need to catch the ferry in Horseshoe Bay, we will stay in Vancouver and just drive to the ferry exit, and not risk a poor nights sleep.
Thank you for taking the time to write. We appreciate all customer feedback because it is through customer comments that we learn of areas in which we can iimprove.
We are pleased that you enjoyed the small town of Horseshoe Bay. We are the closest accommodation to the BC Ferry Terminal here. The walking distance is only about 3 minutes and driving to the Ferry Terminal takes no more than 15 minutes.
It is unfortunate that you and your famiily found sleep difficult. We seldom need air conditioning and the evening you were here, the temperature dropped overnight to a cool 9C which is slightly less than 50F.
We did have a wedding group here but were unaware (until you complained the following day) that they were disruptive. Because of your complaint, we made a point of asking each of our guests as they checked out if they were aware of noise and evey single one (except you) said that there was no problem. Having said this, if you were unhappy with the situation, you could have made mention of it at that time to our Front Desk staff instead of complaining the following day.
Management did not "ignore" your request for compensation. The simple fact is that we want honest reviews and could not accept your threat of a bad TripAdvisor review unless we offered compensation.
We sincerely regret that your were disappointed with your stay at The Horseshoe Bay Motel but we hope to have the opportunity of welcoming you and your family back.
We stayed here prior to catching a morning ferry to Vancouver Island, and the stay was great. The room was very clean and well furnished. The only (minor) gripe was the fact the rooms got very warm in hot weather, so we had to have the fans going all night (a touch noisy). The best thing about here is the convenience for the ferry, and also for the restaurants, cafes and bars in Horseshoe bay, which had a very eclectic mix of people and had a great buzz to it. Nearby Trolls and Trollers were also great for food and drink!!
We actually enjoyed the convenience so much that we decided to come back on our return journey (a late afternoon ferry). In fact, it was so convenient that we drove off the boat and were in our room within 5 minutes - whilst the ferry was still unloading!
The only thing to think about is that it takes about 10 minutes to get to the ferry terminal as you have to go back to the highway and double back on yourself (which isn't too much of a problem).
Overall it was convenient, clean and a great place to stay for the price.
We stayed one night to be close for a early fishing trip. Everyone was friendly, from the hotel staff to the locals. The hotel was quaint, and clean, comfy beds, we enjoyed our stay.
The town in it's self was a wonderful treat....The shops, the park were a nice surprise,we ate dinner in the park, boat/people watched and then played in the park. I only wished we had been able to stay longer. I look forward to a return trip, soon. :-)
I stayed at this hotel for one night and I'm glad I didn't stay any longer. The rooms were really nice looking for a motel, but it's still very important to remember that this is a motel so even though it looks nice, it's not all that great. The beds weren't very comfortable, the sheets were scratchy, the pillows were flat and firm, and there wasn't a lot of space to move around. My skin became very itchy the day after I stayed here and I think it was because my skin negatively reacted to the detergent used to wash their sheets and towels. I way also put off by the fact that the desk staff wasn't extremely friendly and they wouldn't allow a late check-out even though hardly anyone was actually staying there so they probably didn't have to worry too much about getting the room ready for another customer. Additionally, the rooms didn't have blow driers (it's 2011, who doesn't have a blow drier?) or air conditioning. If it wasn't cool in BC most of the year, the latter would make your stay extremely uncomfortable. My favorite part about this place is that they had free wifi and it was pretty reliable.
If you're taking the BC ferry and want to stop here for a night, I would recommend this motel because it's the only one in town. However, don't expect it to be amazing because it looks nice in pictures and keep in mind that there is nothing to do in this tiny tiny town.
